Ads Radar explained: seeing who pays to appear inside AI answers
Sponsored ads are starting to appear inside AI answers. What to capture, how to read an advertiser table, what Ads Radar does not cover, and how to turn it into competitive intelligence.
Quick verdict
If your competitors buy placement inside AI answers, you want to know which prompts, which ad copy, and which landing pages. Ordinary SEO tools do not capture that. Ads Radar, a feature in Promptwatch, does for ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode. It starts on the Business plan and is included on every agency plan. For most teams the sensible move is to treat it as competitive research first and budget decisions second. See Promptwatch for the product.
What Ads Radar captures
According to Promptwatch's documentation, for each sponsored ad inside an answer to a tracked prompt, it records:
- The title and description.
- The image or price.
- The advertiser name and domain.
- The target URL.
- The prompt that triggered the ad.
Views include Ads per day, Top advertisers, a By Ad table, and a By Prompt table showing ad count, your average visibility, and the latest ad. Filters cover model, advertiser domain, prompt type, and date range.
What it does not do
Be clear about limits so no one reports the wrong thing.
| Does not cover | Use instead |
|---|---|
| Perplexity | Not covered by this feature |
| Your own OpenAI campaigns | OpenAI Ads Manager |
| Ads in engines outside the three above | Check the vendor's current list |
It is also a monitoring feature. It shows who advertises. It does not buy ads for you.
How to read the tables
Ads per day. A trend line of how many ads appear across your tracked prompts. A rising line means the surface is monetizing your category.
Top advertisers. Who is paying. Compare it with your organic competitors. Sometimes the advertiser list overlaps with your known rivals. Sometimes it reveals unfamiliar names.
By Ad. The creative itself: copy, claims, and landing pages. This is a library of what rivals say about themselves.
By Prompt. Which prompts attract ads, and what your average visibility is on those prompts. A prompt with many ads and low visibility for you is an exposure risk.
Five uses for the data
- Messaging research. Read rival copy and claims. Note which promises recur.
- Landing page review. Open the target URLs. See what a prompt-matched landing page looks like in your category.
- Budget planning. Identify prompts with heavy ad load, and decide whether to pursue paid placement through the relevant channel or lean on organic presence.
- Defensive checks. If an advertiser targets prompts naming your brand, you will see it.
- Organic prioritization. Prompts with high ad load and low organic visibility need stronger content or citations.
Pair it with organic data
Ads are one part of the answer. The rest is organic mentions and citations. Use the By Prompt table next to citation analytics. If you are cited organically on a prompt that also carries ads, you have visibility on both sides of the answer. If you are absent on both, that prompt belongs on your gap list. Content gap analysis gives coverage scores, and the Action Board can turn findings into prioritized tasks.
A weekly review
| Step | Question |
|---|---|
| 1 | Did total ads per day change? |
| 2 | Any new top advertisers? |
| 3 | Which new ads appeared on our priority prompts? |
| 4 | Does any ad make a claim we should answer on our own pages? |
| 5 | Which prompts have the highest ad load and weakest visibility for us? |
You can set a Scheduled Chat in Promptwatch so the summary arrives in-app or in Slack without someone assembling it manually.
Caution on claims
Do not copy a rival's claim into your own pages. Do not assume an ad's presence means it converts, because this tool shows exposure, not performance. And do not draw conclusions from a handful of prompts. Wait until a trend has run for a few weeks.
Plan notes
Ads Radar starts on Business at $579 a month, with 5 projects, 5 seats, 350 prompts, 42,000 responses, and the automated Content Agent. It is not on Essential ($95) or Professional ($245). It is on every agency plan: Kick-off at $199, Growth at $399, and Scale at $799. The free Explore plan is ChatGPT only and does not include it.
In our directory, other tools mention ad tracking too. Gauge's entry lists ChatGPT Ads tracking among its features.
Who should pick which
| You are... | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| A brand weighing paid AI placement | Business plan, use Ads Radar for research first |
| An agency pitching clients | Agency plans, since Ads Radar is on all of them |
| A brand with no paid budget | Skip it, focus on organic |
| A category with heavy ad load | Track weekly and review By Prompt |
| Working on a tight budget | Do manual spot checks in a few prompts and decide if it is needed |
The right order is to observe, then decide. Promptwatch makes the observation step cheap, because ads, citations, and visibility sit in one place.
