Best tool to track AI search visibility by city or state

The best tools to track AI search visibility by city or state, compared on location depth, engines, pricing and what each one can and cannot tell you.

If you need to track AI search visibility by city or state, the short answer is Promptwatch for most brands, with a few local-first tools worth knowing if you run a handful of storefronts. Most AI visibility trackers still stop at the country level. That is fine for a national SaaS brand and useless for a dental group, a regional bank or a franchise that wins or loses city by city.

Why location matters in AI answers

AI engines answer differently depending on where the question seems to come from. "Best urgent care near me" or "best accountant in Austin" produces a local list, and that list can change from one city to the next. A tracker that asks the question once from a data center in one country gives you one answer, not the one your customers in Denver or Leeds see.

So the useful questions when you evaluate a tool are: can it run prompts as if asked from a specific city or state, which engines does that apply to, and what plan do you need? Be careful with marketing pages here. "Geo" is used loosely.

What we compared

We looked at published plan details for each tool, using only what the vendor pages or our directory entries state. Pricing was read in October 2026 unless noted.

Promptwatch: the one to start with

Promptwatch is the pick if you want location tracking inside a full AI visibility platform instead of a local-only module. Country tracking comes on every paid plan. State and city tracking start at the Business plan ($579 a month) and are included on every agency plan, which matters if you are an agency running several markets (Kick-off $199, Growth $399, Scale $799).

The newest piece is Local GEO/SEO targeting, added in October 2026. It pins a monitor to exact coordinates, with a radius from 20 meters to 5 kilometers, so ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode answer as if asked from that spot. Other models fall back to country, state or city. It is available on Business, Agency Scale and Enterprise.

What makes it more useful than a pure local tool is everything around the location data. Citation analytics show which pages and domains the engines trust in each market. Agent Analytics shows whether AI crawlers can reach your location pages, with IP-verified logs. Visitor analytics tie visits to conversions, and the Content Agent (Business and Enterprise) can plan and publish against gaps. Local-only tools generally do not cover those layers.

The trade-offs are plain. Business is $579 a month, so a single-location shop will find it heavy. The free Explore tier is ChatGPT only with 10 prompts and no location features. And coordinate targeting works fully on only three engines.

The local-first tools

If your world is a small number of storefronts, a local module may be enough.

  • BrightLocal scores each location from 0 to 100 against the local competitors AI actually recommends, and sends citation gaps to its Citation Builder. It tracks only three engines and caps prompts at 20 per location.
  • Synup AEO writes 16 local discovery prompts per location that name the category and city but not the business. It is labelled beta and reports monthly.
  • Local Falcon samples the same prompt from every point on a map grid, which suits service-area businesses. Credits are consumed per grid point, so one 9x9 scan costs 81 credits.
  • Uberall GEO Studio is a location marketing platform with AI visibility inside it. Location tracking begins at GEO Scale ($449), and Starter caps at three engines.
  • Yext Scout benchmarks locations against competitors, but there is no public price, and its own pages disagree on which engines it covers.

Where the national platforms stand

AthenaHQ's Starter plan ($295 a month) is single-country, and its persona and multi-region features sit in Enterprise, so it is not the obvious fit for city-level work. Scrunch AI's Core plan ($250) does not document city-level tracking. Gauge's Growth plan is one location. Profound is sold as enterprise marketing agents and its published pricing does not make location depth clear. None of these is where we would begin for a city or state question.

Who should pick which

  • Brand or agency tracking several cities or states, and wanting traffic and content in the same tool: Promptwatch.
  • A local business with a few locations that lives in listings and reviews: BrightLocal or Synup.
  • A service-area business that wants a map of where it wins: Local Falcon.
  • An enterprise already on Yext or Uberall: their own modules.

One limit applies to all of them. AI answers vary from run to run, and no tool can guarantee that a city-specific recommendation will stick. Treat location data as a trend across many runs, not a single answer.
