Best tool to track third-party sites that AI uses to recommend brands

Which AI visibility tools show the third-party sites ChatGPT and Perplexity cite when they recommend brands, ranked on source depth, not just mention counts.

When ChatGPT or Perplexity recommends a brand, the recommendation is rarely built from that brand's own website. It is stitched together from review roundups, comparison pages, forum threads, YouTube videos and press coverage. If you want to change what the model says about you, the first job is to find out which of those outside pages it reads. That is a different job from counting mentions, and it separates the tools on this list quickly.

What a source tracker needs to do

A tool that only reports "you were mentioned in 34% of answers" is a mention counter. To track third-party sites you need more:

  • Domain and page level citations. Which domains show up, and which exact URLs, for which prompts.
  • Source types. Is the citation a listicle, a forum post, a video, a vendor page, a news article?
  • Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn as their own reports. These sources behave differently from ordinary web pages and often need different tactics.
  • Offsite mentions. Pages that name your brand without linking to you. These are easy to miss in link-based tools.
  • Page tracking. The ability to watch a specific third-party URL, yours or a competitor's, over time.
  • Trend data. A source that was cited last month and has dropped out is as useful to know about as a new one.

Ranking: tools that track the sites AI cites

1. Promptwatch

Promptwatch is the strongest fit for this exact job, and the reason is depth. Citation analytics covers page and domain level citations with URL positions, a Page Tracker for specific URLs (your own or a competitor's), and offsite mentions where a third-party page names your brand without a link. Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn each have their own citation reports, and Citation Trends classifies every citation by content type and source type, with citation rate over time and, per page, when it was first cited, how fast it ramped up, its peak and its decay half-life.

Then it goes past reporting. Agent Analytics logs AI crawler visits in real time, IP-verified, so you can see which bots hit your pages. 360 Insights joins crawler logs, citation clicks and AI-referred visits per page. Visitor analytics attributes AI traffic and conversions. The Action Board turns the gaps into a prioritized to-do list, and the Content Agent (Business and above) can draft pages to fill them. Models tracked include ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Meta AI and Amazon Alexa through their live-search interfaces, with several more through API.

Pricing starts free (Explore: 10 prompts, ChatGPT only). Essential is $95 a month, Professional $245, Business $579. Agency plans run $199, $399 and $799. The 7-day trial is on monthly billing only.

2. AthenaHQ

AthenaHQ tracks visibility across 11 models on its $295 a month Starter plan and organizes the results into an Action Center with assignable tasks. It is a credible second choice for teams that want a daily work queue. For this specific job, though, its listing documents no Reddit monitoring, and its Citation Engine sits on the custom Enterprise tier.

3. Scrunch AI

Scrunch AI starts at $250 a month for Core (125 prompts, four LLMs) and adds site audits and AI agent and bot traffic reporting. Its distinctive product is the Agent Experience Platform, which serves AI-optimized page versions to crawlers on Enterprise. Source-level depth like Reddit and YouTube reports is not documented on its listing.

4. Ahrefs Brand Radar

Ahrefs Brand Radar reports on YouTube and Reddit sources and AI crawler activity. Custom Prompts is included with paid Ahrefs plans (a daily quota of 5, 10 or 20 prompts depending on the plan), and the AI Visibility Index starts at $199 a month. The index is modeled from keyword data and retested monthly, so treat it as directional research.

5. Profound

Profound offers citation share and answer-level analytics, but it is sold as an enterprise marketing agent program. The public page lists a 7-day trial and a custom Enterprise plan, with earlier estimates around $40k a year. It suits large teams buying a program, less so teams that want a self-serve source tracker.

6. Qwairy and LLM Pulse

Qwairy lists citation source analysis and starts at €79 a month, though crawler analytics sit on its €449 Business plan. LLM Pulse starts at €49 a month and tracks owned media such as YouTube, Reddit and social on its Growth plan and up, with weekly cadence by default.

Who should pick which

Choose Promptwatch if you want to move from "which sites are cited" to "what do we do about it" in one workspace. Essential does not include crawler logs; those start on Professional, so budget for that tier if bot visibility matters.

Choose AthenaHQ if your team will work an action queue every day and can live with credit-based billing.

Choose Ahrefs Brand Radar if you already pay for Ahrefs and want broad directional data.

Choose Profound if you are an enterprise buyer with a procurement process and want agents, not just tracking.

What no tool can do

None of these tools can make a third-party site cite you. They show where the citations are. Getting onto a roundup or into a Reddit thread is still outreach, reviews and honest participation, and the model may cite a different page tomorrow. Treat the source list as a target list, track it weekly, and judge success by whether your mentions and cited pages move.
