Can a GEO tool really make a difference in SEO for AI models like Claude?

A GEO tool cannot change Claude, but it can show when Claude searches, who it cites, and what to fix. Here is where tools help, where they do not, and which to try.

A GEO tool does not change Claude. It cannot nudge a model into recommending you. What it can do is measure what Claude says, show which sources it relies on, check whether Claude's crawlers can read your pages, and point at the fixes. Whether that makes a difference depends on how Claude finds information and on whether you act on what the tool shows.

How Claude finds information, and why it matters for SEO

According to Anthropic's own documentation (Help Center and developer docs, read on 31 October 2026), Claude searches the web when a question needs current, changing, or outside-training information, or when the user asks it to search. When it searches, it can run multiple searches, refine its queries, and use earlier results to guide later ones. Web-sourced answers include citations with source links. When web search is on, Claude can also fetch a page directly if given its URL, and it may use a location inferred from the user's IP address for localized results. For stable knowledge, such as established facts or fundamentals, the developer docs say Claude answers directly without searching.

That has two consequences for anyone doing SEO for Claude:

  1. For questions that trigger a search, your pages can be found and cited. The same basics apply: be crawlable, answer the question clearly, and be present on the sources that get retrieved.
  2. For questions answered from training knowledge, a page you publish today will not change the answer quickly. Tools cannot fix that. Presence across the web over time is what shapes it.

So the honest answer to "can a tool make a difference" is that it can for the search-triggered share of questions, and its main contribution is visibility into what is happening.

What a GEO tool can and cannot do

It can:

  • run your buyer questions against Claude on a schedule and report how often you are mentioned and in what position
  • show which pages and domains are cited when Claude does use sources
  • show whether Claude-related crawlers can reach your content
  • compare you with competitors on the same prompts
  • turn gaps into content and technical tasks

It cannot:

  • guarantee a mention or a recommendation
  • make Claude search when it would not
  • replace publishing something worth citing, or earning mentions on third-party sites

Evidence for GEO as a whole is mixed in quality. Vendor claims and studies exist, but we are not citing numbers here that we have not verified, and you should treat any tool that promises a percentage lift with caution. The reliable benefit is measurement and diagnosis.

1. Promptwatch: Claude tracking plus the reasons behind it

Promptwatch tracks Claude (Haiku 5.5) via API, alongside other API models such as DeepSeek, Mistral, and Grok. To be precise, that is an API reading, not the Claude interface. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Alexa, and Meta AI are monitored through real UIs, and the coding agents Codex and Claude Code are tracked as well. Every paid plan includes all active models.

What makes it useful for the Claude question specifically:

  • Agent Analytics shows IP-verified AI crawler logs, including ClaudeBot, Claude-User, and Claude-SearchBot, with crawl-to-citation paths and error tracking. If a Claude crawler hits a 403 on your key page, you will see it.
  • Citation analytics at page and domain level, with offsite mentions, show which sources are cited for each prompt.
  • Visibility Score, Share of Voice, and Position in Answer by model, with a heatmap comparing models to brands or topics, show where Claude differs from ChatGPT.
  • Visitor analytics attributes AI-referred visits, including Claude, to conversions.
  • Action Board and content tools turn findings into tasks and drafts.

Plans: Explore is free (ChatGPT only), Essential $95/mo, Professional $245/mo (crawler logs start here), Business $579/mo.

2. Other tools and Claude coverage

Ceyo lists live capture from Claude among eight interfaces but caps models per plan (2 on Core at $39/mo billed yearly, 3 on Grow, 4 on Pro+). AthenaHQ starts at $295/mo with 11 models and an action queue, credit-based. Scrunch AI starts at $250/mo, and its Core plan tracks four LLMs without Claude. Am I Cited tracks Claude on every plan from 50 euros/mo but publishes no crawler-log product. Profound lists Claude on Enterprise. GetIntel puts Claude on its $99/mo Growth plan.

A practical test

  1. Pick 30 questions your buyers ask and track them on Claude and ChatGPT for two weeks.
  2. Note which questions trigger sources, and which cited domains appear.
  3. Check whether Claude's crawlers can reach your key pages.
  4. Fix access first, then add or refresh pages for the questions where you are absent.
  5. Compare the two periods, and keep a daily baseline.

If, after that, your mention rate on search-triggered questions has moved, the tool has paid for itself. If it has not, you will at least know whether the cause is access, content, or third-party presence.
