Content gap analysis for AI search: a working method from prompts to briefs

How to find the questions AI engines answer without you, rank them by value, and turn them into briefs. Includes a scoring sheet and where coverage scores speed things up.

Quick verdict

A content gap in AI search is a question buyers ask, where answers name competitors and not you, and you have no page that deserves to be cited. Finding gaps is the cheap part. Ranking them and turning them into briefs is where programs stall. Promptwatch handles the first half with content gap analysis that gives coverage scores, and it offers a path to the second through on-demand content creation and, on Business, the Content Agent.

Step 1: collect the questions

Start with real questions, not keywords. Sources:

  • Prompts already tracked in your panel.
  • Search Console queries and People Also Ask entries.
  • Questions from sales calls and support tickets.
  • Query fan-outs, the sub-searches an AI runs to answer a prompt.

Promptwatch's Prompt Explorer suggests prompts from Search Console, ranking keywords, People Also Ask, or any page. Query fan-outs are shown per model, so you can see sub-questions that you would never have written yourself.

Step 2: check coverage

For each question, ask three things:

  1. Do we have a page that answers it directly?
  2. If yes, is that page cited when the prompt is run?
  3. If no, who is cited instead?

A question with no page is a true gap. A question with a page that is not cited is a quality gap, better fixed by a rewrite than a new article.

Promptwatch's content gap analysis returns coverage scores, and the Answer Gap Report is the artifact Monks, an agency that uses it, builds client content roadmaps from. Treat that as one customer's workflow, not a promise of results.

Step 3: score each gap

Use a simple sheet. Rate each from 1 to 5 on four columns, then sum.

Column1 means5 means
Buyer valueCuriosity onlyDirectly precedes purchase
FrequencyRareAppears across many prompts and personas
WinnabilityDominant authority already citedCited sources are thin or old
EffortNeeds original researchYou can answer from existing knowledge

Start with the highest total. If the top five all sit in one topic, build a cluster instead of five unrelated posts.

Prompt Volumes show search volumes, difficulty scores, and citation rates across AI search, Google, and Bing, which can inform the frequency and winnability columns without guessing.

Step 4: write a brief that targets the citation

A brief for AI search differs a little from an SEO brief. Include:

  • The exact question as the heading.
  • A direct answer in the first two sentences.
  • The specifics a thin competitor page lacks, such as numbers, steps, named options.
  • The format winning today: a table, a checklist, a comparison.
  • Facts you can source. Do not include a claim you cannot verify.
  • The persona you are writing for.

Promptwatch supports personas, including persona stacking, so you can test whether one page answers several buyer profiles.

Step 5: produce and publish

You can write it yourself. Promptwatch also provides Content Creation from a brief, a rich text editor with AI images, author profiles, and a Knowledge Base on Professional and up, so output reflects your facts. Publishing goes to WordPress through the official plugin, to Webflow including localized collections, and to Framer with AI field mapping.

On Business and Enterprise, the Content Agent plans, writes, and publishes against gaps on a schedule, with a publishing calendar, monthly budget, publish windows, and a maximum per day. It offers a review inbox or hands-off mode with a quality check. It is not part of agency plans.

Step 6: measure the outcome

CheckWhere
Is the new page fetched?Agent Analytics crawler logs
Is it cited?Page Tracker, citation analytics
Did visibility on the prompt improve?Prompt trends, Visibility Score
Did it drive visits?Visitor analytics

Give a new page three to four weeks before judging, and remember that Citation Trends shows ramp-up days per page, which sets realistic expectations.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not publish forty thin pages. Do not copy a competitor's page with the nouns swapped. Do not claim data you do not have. These are the common ways a gap program creates content that is cited by no one.

Plan notes

Essential at $95 a month includes content gap analysis and 50 prompts. Professional at $245 adds the Knowledge Base, 5 AEO articles, and custom reports. Business at $579 includes the Content Agent and 10 AEO articles. Agency plans, from $199, include content gap analysis but not AEO articles, the Knowledge Base, or the Content Agent.

Other tools in our ranking lean toward content too. AirOps is described as a workflow engine for content operations, and Gauge's entry lists a built-in content engine.

Who should pick which

You are...Recommendation
A solo marketerManual scoring sheet, plus Essential for coverage scores
A team publishing weeklyProfessional, with the Knowledge Base
A content-heavy brandBusiness, for the Content Agent
An agencyAgency plans for gap analysis, write the content in your own workflow
Not ready to publishRun gap analysis only, build the roadmap first

The method is the same everywhere. Promptwatch earns the recommendation because gaps, briefs, publishing, and measurement stay in one workspace.
