Google AI Overviews vs AI Mode: how to track each and why they differ
AI Overviews and AI Mode both put generated answers inside Google, but they behave differently for tracking. How to monitor each, connect them to Search Console, and report them separately.
Quick verdict
Treat Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode as two surfaces, not one. An Overview appears above or among regular results for some queries. AI Mode is a dedicated conversational experience. They can cite different pages for the same topic, and a report that blends them hides where you are strong. Track both separately, and overlay Search Console data to see what your normal rankings are doing meanwhile. Promptwatch monitors both through the real interface and folds Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster data into Search Insights, which makes it the most complete single place to do that.
Side by side
| Aspect | AI Overviews | AI Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Where it lives | On the standard results page for some queries | A separate conversational mode |
| Typical prompt style | Short search queries | Longer, conversational questions with follow-ups |
| Trigger | Only some queries produce an Overview | The mode itself generates an answer |
| Tracking approach | Capture the Overview for a defined query set | Capture answers for conversational prompts |
| Ads | Sponsored ads can appear, and are captured by Ads Radar | Same |
| Location sensitivity | High for local and shopping queries | High |
We are deliberately not stating how often Overviews trigger or what share of searches use AI Mode. We do not have a sourced figure.
Tracking AI Overviews
An Overview exists only when Google decides to show one, so tracking starts with a query list, not a prompt list. Use your Search Console queries as the seed, then add a few from People Also Ask.
For each query, record:
- Whether an Overview appeared.
- Whether you were cited in it.
- Which competitors were cited.
- Whether your normal organic result sat above, below, or absent from the page.
That last point matters. A page that ranks well and is not cited in the Overview faces a different problem from a page that ranks poorly and is cited.
Tracking AI Mode
AI Mode answers conversational prompts. Seed it with the longer, scenario-style questions your customers ask. Persona matters here, since the same question from a different type of person may be framed differently. Promptwatch supports personas with persona stacking, so a prompt can be tested across several buyer profiles.
Also track follow-ups. Because the interaction is conversational, the second question often decides who gets cited.
Why Search Console belongs in the picture
Google's own report data and AI answers measure different things, but they overlap in time and topic. Search Insights in Promptwatch overlays Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster traffic, including Microsoft Copilot, on AI crawls and citations. Seeing the two together answers a question that pure tracking cannot: did our classic impressions fall when our Overview citations rose, or did both move together?
Promptwatch's Prompt Explorer can also generate prompt suggestions from Search Console, ranking keywords, People Also Ask, or any page, which closes the loop between the data you already have and the prompts worth tracking. Prompt Volumes add search volumes, difficulty scores, and citation rates across AI search, Google, and Bing.
Location pinning
Local queries make Overviews and AI Mode behave differently by place. Promptwatch's Local GEO/SEO targeting pins a monitor to exact coordinates, with a radius from 20 m to 5 km, so ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode answer as if asked from that spot. It is available on Business, Agency Scale, and Enterprise. Other models fall back to country, state, or city.
Ads in Google's AI surfaces
Ads Radar captures sponsored ads inside Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode answers (and ChatGPT Search) to your tracked prompts, with advertiser, target URL, and the triggering prompt. It does not cover Perplexity. It starts on Business and is on every agency plan.
What to report
| Metric | AI Overviews | AI Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance rate for tracked queries | Yes | n/a |
| Citation rate | Yes | Yes |
| Competitor share of citations | Yes | Yes |
| Position among cited sources | Yes | Yes |
| Overlay with Search Console impressions | Yes | Yes, at topic level |
Keep them in separate charts. A blended "Google AI" number cannot be acted on.
Plan notes
Explore is ChatGPT only, so Google tracking needs a paid plan. Essential at $95 a month unlocks all active models at 50 prompts and 6,000 responses. Professional at $245 adds 150 prompts and custom reports. Business at $579 brings state and city tracking, coordinate targeting, Shopping Insights, and Ads Radar.
Who should pick which
| You are... | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| A local business | Business plan for coordinate targeting, track both surfaces by area |
| A publisher with strong organic rankings | Start with AI Overviews and Search Insights |
| A SaaS company with complex buying questions | Start with AI Mode and persona stacking |
| An agency | Agency plans, Ads Radar and state and city tracking are on all of them |
| Just curious | The free AI Visibility Report, then Essential |
The ranking lists alternatives for Google tracking. We recommend Promptwatch because tracking, Search Console overlay, and crawler data live together, and because separating the two surfaces is straightforward there rather than a custom build.
