How do I get my website to show up as a source when ChatGPT answers questions in my niche

A step-by-step plan to get your website cited as a source in ChatGPT answers for your niche: crawler access, Bing and IndexNow, niche prompts, and measurement tools.

The short version

To be cited as a source in ChatGPT, your pages need to be fetchable by OpenAI's bots, easy to find through the indexes and search feeds the assistant can draw on, direct about the questions people in your niche ask, and supported by other sources that describe you. Then you measure which prompts name you, because the answer changes by phrasing, place and day.

Nobody can promise a citation. What you can do is remove the obstacles and check the results with a tracker like Promptwatch, which shows which pages ChatGPT cites for your prompts and whether its crawlers reach you.

Step 1: let OpenAI's bots in

OpenAI documents several user agents. GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User are the ones to know. A blanket bot rule in a CDN, a firewall, or an old robots.txt line is the most common reason a good site never appears. Review your rules and decide on purpose which of these to allow.

Then check the logs. Promptwatch's Agent Analytics records real-time, IP-verified AI crawler logs, with spoofed user agents filtered out, and shows errors with explanations. It also gives a crawl-to-citation path with a citation rate per page. Crawler logs start on Professional at $245 a month, and Essential does not include them.

Step 2: get indexed in Bing and ping changes

Search-style AI answers lean on search indexes, and which index feeds which assistant is not something every vendor documents in full. So we do not recommend betting on one. We do recommend covering Bing, because Bing Webmaster data includes Microsoft Copilot traffic and because it is cheap to do.

  • Bing Webmaster Tools: verify your site, submit your sitemap, and read the crawl and index reports.
  • IndexNow: an open protocol that lets you notify participating search engines when a URL is added, updated or removed, so new and changed pages are seen sooner. Many CMS plugins support it.
  • Google Search Console: the same job for Google, which matters for AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Promptwatch folds Search Console and Bing Webmaster data into Search Insights, which overlays your Google and Bing traffic, including Microsoft Copilot, on AI crawls and citations. That makes it easier to spot a page that is indexed but never cited.

Step 3: write for the questions in your niche

Niche prompts are specific. "Best accounting software for a three-person design studio" is a different request from "best accounting software." A model splits it into several sub-searches, and a page can win one of them.

So the best content for a niche is narrow and direct.

  • One page per specific question, with the answer in the first paragraph.
  • The real constraints your readers state: team size, budget, region, regulation, tool stack.
  • Facts that can be checked, with dates and named sources.
  • Plain comparisons that say who a product is for and who it is not for.

To find the questions, use Prompt Explorer in Promptwatch, which suggests prompts from Search Console, ranking keywords, People Also Ask or any page. Prompt Volumes adds search volumes, difficulty scores and citation rates. Tag prompts by persona to keep the panel close to your real buyers.

Step 4: earn mentions where the engine already looks

Look at which third-party domains get cited for your niche prompts. Often it is Reddit threads, YouTube videos, review sites and trade publications. Promptwatch has Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citation reports and tracks offsite mentions, which are cases where your brand is named on a third-party page without a link. If a niche forum dominates the citations, being a useful, honest participant there can matter more than another post on your own site.

Step 5: measure with a fixed panel

Build a panel of 30 to 50 niche prompts and track them over weeks. Watch whether you are mentioned, in what position, and which of your pages are cited. Promptwatch runs panels daily per model, country and language, and reports Visibility Score, Share of Voice and Position in Answer.

Who should pick which

If you want to see crawl access, citations and traffic together, start with Promptwatch. If you only want to see bot activity for free and you are on Cloudflare, use its dashboard first. If you will work a daily action queue, AthenaHQ is worth a trial.

What to expect

A niche is an advantage. There are fewer pages competing for a narrow question, so a precise answer can win. But results vary by prompt wording, model and location, and no tool can promise that ChatGPT will name you. Fix access, publish a clear answer to ten niche questions, and look at the results in a month.
