How do I improve my rankings in AI search results? A practical guide for 2026

AI answers have no fixed ranking, but you can raise how often you are cited. Here is the workflow, from crawler access to content fixes, and the tools that measure it.

Start with a correction that saves a lot of wasted effort: AI search has no ranking page one to ten in the way Google's blue links do. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews assemble an answer, and your brand either appears in it, is cited as a source, or does not show up. So "improving rankings" really means three things: being fetched by the right crawlers, being picked as a cited source, and being named in the answer text. Each one has a different fix, and each one can be measured.

Step 1: make sure the AI crawlers can reach you

This is the cheapest win and the one most teams skip. ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot to index pages, ChatGPT-User fetches pages when a person asks about them, and GPTBot is the training crawler. Anthropic runs ClaudeBot, Claude-User and Claude-SearchBot. Perplexity uses PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User. If your robots.txt, CDN rules or bot protection block these, you are out of the running before content quality matters.

Check three things: robots.txt rules, firewall or CDN bot rules, and server errors on pages you want cited. You want to see real requests from these bots in your logs, not just assume they are allowed. Most analytics tools never show this, because crawlers do not run JavaScript.

Step 2: find the prompts you should win

Pick the questions your buyers actually ask AI models. A good starting set mixes organic questions ("best accounting software for freelancers"), brand questions ("is X worth it") and competitor comparisons ("X vs Y"). Group them by topic and country, then run them daily, because answers change between runs.

Query fan-outs matter here. When you ask ChatGPT one question, it often fires several narrower searches behind the scenes, and your page has to match those sub-queries, not only the headline question. Content that answers the specific comparison, the specific price question or the specific "official documentation" lookup gets picked up more often than a broad overview.

Step 3: fix the content and pages that get skipped

Once you know which prompts you lose, look at who wins them. The cited pages are usually direct answers: clear headings, a short definition up top, a comparison table, a sourced number. Pages that bury the answer under a long introduction lose to pages that state it in the first paragraph.

Practical edits that tend to help:

  • Lead each section with the answer, then support it.
  • Add comparison tables with real, dated numbers.
  • Keep pricing and feature pages current, since models often cite them for "official" lookups.
  • Cover the specific sub-questions your fan-outs show, as their own sections.
  • Earn mentions off your own site too: third-party reviews, Reddit threads and YouTube videos get cited heavily for commercial prompts.

Google's own guidance for AI features points back to the usual fundamentals: crawlable pages, helpful content, structured data that matches visible content. Bing Webmaster Tools also feeds Copilot, so verifying your site there is a quick step.

Step 4: measure, then repeat

You cannot manage this by hand-checking ChatGPT once a week. You need prompt tracking over time, citation data and crawler logs in one place.

Which tools do the job

ToolWhat it coversFit
PromptwatchPrompt tracking, citation analytics, real-time AI crawler logs, visitor analytics, content generation and an Action BoardTeams that want to measure and fix in one platform
AthenaHQGEO score and an Action Center for assignable tasks, from $295 a month (Starter)Teams that will work an optimization queue daily
Scrunch AIMonitoring, site audits and an Agent Experience Platform, Core from $250 a monthContent-heavy sites with an agent-serving angle
ProfoundEnterprise marketing agents with AI search as one channel, custom Enterprise pricingLarge teams buying a broader agent program

Promptwatch comes first here because it is the only one of these that covers the whole loop. Its Agent Analytics shows IP-verified crawler logs, so you can see whether OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot actually hit a page, and a citation rate per page. Citation analytics shows which pages and domains the models cite for your prompts. Its Action Board turns the data into a prioritized to-do list, and the Content Agent (Business plan) can plan and publish against visibility gaps, with a review inbox if you want a human check. Pricing starts free on Explore (10 prompts, ChatGPT only), with Essential at $95 a month, Professional at $245 and Business at $579. Crawler logs begin on Professional.

AthenaHQ is the closest match on the action side, with an Action Center and a content optimization agent, but it does not give you crawler logs. Scrunch AI has crawler-side features and site audits but is priced per prompt and engine. Profound is sold more as a marketing agent suite than a tracker, with Enterprise pricing that earlier estimates put around $40k a year. Monitoring-only trackers such as Otterly.AI and Peec AI show where you appear but not why, so they work best as a starting point rather than the full answer.

A realistic weekly routine

  1. Check the crawler logs for errors on pages you want cited.
  2. Review which tracked prompts gained or lost visibility.
  3. Read the citation report for the prompts you lost, and note which pages beat you.
  4. Rewrite or add one page per loss, leading with the direct answer.
  5. Look at AI-referred visits and conversions to see whether the work paid off.

What no tool can promise

No platform can guarantee that a model recommends you. Answers vary by run, by country and by user. The honest goal is a higher share of voice across a stable prompt set over weeks, not a fixed position. If someone sells you a guaranteed AI ranking, walk away. Measure the trend, fix what the data points at, and keep the prompt set stable so you can tell whether your changes made a difference.
