How do I track my ranking position in Perplexity? Methods and tools

How do I track my ranking position in Perplexity? What position means in an AI answer, a manual method, and the tools that track it, ranked with pricing.

Perplexity does not have a rank like a Google results page. It writes an answer, names some brands inside it, and attaches numbered source citations. So "my ranking position in Perplexity" really means two separate things, and you need to track both. The first is where your brand appears inside the answer text: first mentioned, third, not at all. The second is where your pages appear in the citation list: source one, source six, or missing. A good tracking setup records each, per prompt, over time.

What to measure

  • Mention position. Rank of your brand among the brands named in the answer.
  • Citation position. Where your URL sits in the numbered sources.
  • Citation rate. Share of tracked prompts where any of your pages is cited.
  • Share of voice. Your mentions relative to named competitors across the prompt set.
  • Referral traffic. Visits that arrive from Perplexity, so position can be tied to results.

Position is noisy. The same prompt can return a different order tomorrow, so track a set of prompts and read the trend, not a single day.

The manual method

Pick ten prompts a buyer would ask. Run each in Perplexity, then record in a sheet which brands are named and in what order, and which sources are cited and in what order. Repeat on a different day. It is free and it teaches you how Perplexity builds answers, but it scales badly, and it cannot show you crawler activity. PerplexityBot builds the search index and Perplexity-User fetches pages on a user's request, so if your robots.txt or firewall blocks them, your pages may not appear no matter how good they are.

Tools that track Perplexity position, ranked

1. Promptwatch

Promptwatch monitors Perplexity through real-UI monitoring, with prompt panels run daily per model, country and language. It reports Visibility Score, Share of Voice, Sentiment and Position in Answer. Citation analytics goes to URL level, including URL positions, a Page Tracker for specific URLs (yours or a competitor's), and offsite mentions where your brand is named without a link. Agent Analytics logs IP-verified crawler hits including PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User with errors per page, which starts on Professional. Visitor analytics measures Perplexity-referred visits and conversions.

Pricing: Explore is free but ChatGPT only, so Perplexity tracking needs a paid plan: Essential $95 a month (50 prompts), Professional $245, Business $579. Agency plans start at $199. The free 7-day trial on lower tiers is a low-cost way to test Perplexity tracking.

2. AthenaHQ

AthenaHQ lists 11 models on its $295 Starter plan with 3,600 credits (one per response), and a free Essential tier of 300 credits. It rolls results into a GEO score with an Action Center.

3. Scrunch AI

Scrunch AI Core ($250 a month) tracks Perplexity alongside ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Copilot, with 125 prompts and 5,000 responses a month, plus AI agent and bot traffic reporting.

4. Profound

Profound has a free 7-day trial, with Perplexity among nine engines on custom Enterprise pricing, where an earlier estimate was about $40k a year.

5. Suite add-ons and lighter trackers

Ahrefs Brand Radar covers Perplexity in its AI Visibility Index and Custom Prompts. HubSpot AEO ($50 a month) tracks ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Otterly.AI includes Perplexity as a base engine from $29 a month, and Peec AI offers prompt-level monitoring.

Who should pick which

  • You want position plus the reason it moved: Promptwatch, for citation positions and crawler logs together.
  • You want an action center and credits: AthenaHQ.
  • You are testing on a very small budget: the manual method, then a trial.

Using the data

When position drops, check in order: did a competitor gain a citation, did your page stop being cited, and did PerplexityBot see errors on it? Fix the cause, then re-run the same prompts. No tool can promise Perplexity will rank you higher. What you get is a measured trend and a list of likely reasons, which is enough to decide what to publish or repair next.

A practical weekly routine

Run your tracked prompts daily through a tool, but only look at trends weekly. Each week, note the three prompts where your mention position fell most and the three where your citation rate rose. Open the full answers for the falling ones and read what Perplexity actually said. Often the answer now cites a fresher comparison article or a forum thread that did not exist a month ago. That tells you what to write or where to take part, which is more useful than the number itself.

Keep a short change log next to the data: pages published, robots.txt edits, redirects, template changes. When position moves, the log is the first place to look for a cause you control.
