How does AI search engine optimization work and how is it different from regular SEO

How AI search engine optimization works and how it differs from regular SEO: citations over rankings, query fan-outs, crawler access and how to measure the results.

AI search engine optimization, often called GEO (generative engine optimization) or AEO (answer engine optimization), is the practice of making your content more likely to be used in the answers that AI systems write. It overlaps with regular SEO, and it also breaks from it in a few places that matter.

What regular SEO optimizes for

Traditional SEO aims to get a page ranked in a list of results for a keyword. Success is measured in position, impressions, clicks and traffic. The reader sees ten links and chooses.

What AI search optimization optimizes for

In AI search, the engine writes an answer, often with a handful of cited sources, and the reader may never click. Success looks different:

  • Being mentioned in the answer.
  • Being cited as a source.
  • How you are described: sentiment and framing.
  • Position within the answer.
  • Visits that arrive from those citations.

So the central shift is from ranking to inclusion.

How the engines produce answers

The details differ per engine, but the pattern is similar. A user asks a question. The system often breaks it into several related searches, known as query fan-outs. It retrieves pages, reads passages, and composes an answer, citing some sources. Different engines use different crawlers and indexes. For OpenAI's search that includes OAI-SearchBot, with ChatGPT-User fetching pages on a person's behalf. Others use PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google's agents and more.

This explains the practical differences.

Where it differs from SEO

OutcomeA ranked linkA mention or citation in a written answer
StabilityPositions are fairly stable day to dayAnswers vary between runs
MeasurementRank trackers, Search ConsolePrompt panels, citation analytics, crawler logs

Where it overlaps

Quality content, clear structure, crawlability and trust all still matter. Good SEO is rarely harmful for AI visibility, and much of the groundwork carries over. The research literature on generative engine optimization and the guidance from Google and Bing on AI features both point to the same fundamentals: useful, well-sourced content that machines can read. Do not throw away your SEO program.

How the work gets done

  1. Define prompts your buyers ask.
  2. Track them daily across engines.
  3. Read citations to see who wins and what formats they use.
  4. Check crawler access for the AI bots.
  5. Improve content: answer-first pages, covering sub-questions, sourced facts.
  6. Measure by period.

Tools that support it

How Promptwatch maps to the differences

The differences in the table each correspond to a feature.

  • Questions and fan-outs: Prompt tracking with search volumes and difficulty, plus query fan-outs per model.
  • Mentions and citations: Visibility Score, Share of Voice, Position in Answer, page- and domain-level citation analytics.
  • Variation between runs: daily monitors per model, country and language, with A/B period comparison.
  • Other sources: citation reports for Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn, plus offsite mentions.
  • AI bots: Agent Analytics with IP-verified crawler logs for the real bots. From the Professional plan ($245/mo).
  • Connecting both worlds: Search Insights overlays Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster traffic on AI crawls and citations, so you can read classic and AI search together.

Content gap analysis, content creation, Content Refresh and WordPress, Webflow and Framer publishing handle the improvement step. A free Explore plan covers 10 prompts on ChatGPT.

Who should pick which

If you want to see classic and AI search in one view and act on it, Promptwatch. If you want a guided action queue, AthenaHQ. If you are already in Semrush, try its toolkit first.

What to keep in mind

AI optimization cannot guarantee inclusion. Answers vary and engines change. Treat results as trends and invest in the fundamentals.

A note on terminology

You will see GEO, AEO, LLMO and "AI SEO" used interchangeably. The labels differ, the work is the same: be readable, be useful, be cited. Do not let vendors turn a naming choice into a methodology. Ask instead what they measure, which engines they cover and what you can do with the result.
