Isn't GEO just SEO with a new name? Why would we need a separate tool for it?

GEO overlaps with SEO, but it needs different measurement. Here is what carries over, what does not, and why a separate tool earns its place in the stack.

Partly, yes. Much of what works for generative engine optimization is good SEO: a site that can be crawled, pages that answer real questions, genuine authority. If your SEO fundamentals are broken, fixing them is the first GEO task too. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling a mystery.

The "new name" argument fails somewhere else, though. It fails at measurement. The work may overlap, but the scoreboard does not, and that is what the separate tool is for.

What carries over from SEO

  • Technical hygiene: crawlable, fast, well-structured pages.
  • Content that answers questions directly.
  • Authority and credibility signals.
  • Clear site architecture and internal links.

Google's own Search Central documentation covers how AI features in Search use site content. Read it directly, because it is the primary source for Google's surfaces. For other engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot, there is no single rulebook, which is another reason to measure instead of assume.

What is genuinely different

The unit is a prompt, not a keyword. Buyers ask long, conversational questions, and the same question can return different answers on different days. You track a panel of prompts over time, not a position.

The outcome is a mention or citation, not a rank. A page can rank well and never be cited. A brand can be named without a link.

Third-party sources matter heavily. Reddit threads, YouTube videos and review pages show up in citations. Your own ranking pages are only part of the picture.

There is a new audience: AI crawlers. Bots such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot fetch your pages. Their access and errors do not show up in a rank tracker, and a page-view script will not record them either.

Attribution is different. AI referrals show up as visits from assistants, and you need to tie them to conversions.

What your SEO stack cannot see

Search Console and rank trackers tell you how you perform in classic search. They do not tell you what ChatGPT said about your brand yesterday, which sources it cited, or whether its crawler got an error on your pricing page. A separate tool is simply a way to see those things.

Promptwatch shows how this fits together. It runs prompt panels daily per model, country and language, and reports Visibility Score, Share of Voice, Sentiment and Position in Answer. Citation analytics covers pages, domains, Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn and offsite mentions. Agent Analytics reads IP-verified AI crawler logs. Visitor analytics ties AI referrals to conversions. And as of late October 2026, Search Insights overlays Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster data (including Copilot) on AI crawls and citations, so the SEO view and the GEO view sit together rather than apart.

That last point answers the "do we need two stacks" worry. You do not need to abandon your SEO tools. You add the layer they lack.

When you do not need a separate tool

Be honest about this. If you have a small site, a handful of target questions and no interest in tracking, manual checks in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini can tell you something. Free tools exist too, such as Promptwatch's AI Visibility Report, a no-login scan. A paid platform starts to pay off when you have many prompts, several markets, competitors to benchmark, or stakeholders who want a number.

The SEO suites are reasonable if you already live in them and want a basic AI view. Semrush's AI Toolkit price could not be re-verified in our last check, so confirm it on the vendor page. Ahrefs' Custom Prompts has a daily quota of 5, 10 or 20 prompts depending on the plan.

Our verdict

Treat GEO as an extension of SEO that needs its own instruments. Keep your SEO tools, fix the shared fundamentals, and add a platform that measures prompts, citations, crawler access and AI traffic. Promptwatch is where we would start, because it covers all four and connects to your Google and Bing data. And remember the limit: no tool guarantees a recommendation. It tells you where you stand, why, and what to fix.
