What is AI search optimization? A plain-English guide and the tools that do it

AI search optimization means earning mentions and citations in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews. Here is how it works and which platforms handle it.

A working definition

AI search optimization is the practice of making your brand and your pages easy for AI assistants to find, trust and quote when they answer a question. The assistants in question include ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and others. You will also see it called generative engine optimization (GEO) or answer engine optimization (AEO). The labels overlap, and people argue about the boundaries. For a buyer, the practical meaning is the same: when someone asks an AI "what is the best tool for X", you want to be in the answer, described correctly, with a link.

It is not a replacement for classic SEO. Many of the inputs are shared: pages that can be crawled, content that answers the question clearly, sites other pages refer to. What changes is the output. A search results page offers ten links and lets the reader choose. An AI answer picks a handful of sources and writes one response. Being the source behind that response is a different goal from ranking third.

How AI answers get built, in short

You do not need the engineering detail to act on this, but three ideas help.

Retrieval. Many assistants search the web at answer time. They break your question into several narrower searches (often called query fan-outs), fetch pages, and write from what they find. Pages that cannot be fetched, or that do not match those narrower searches, never enter the pool.

Selection. From the retrieved pages, the assistant chooses what to cite. We cannot tell you the exact rules, and neither can anyone outside the vendors. What you can observe is the pattern: which domains get cited for which prompts, and how that shifts over time.

Description. Even when you are mentioned, the assistant decides how to describe you: sentiment, position in the list, what it says you are good at. Wrong or stale descriptions are a visibility problem too.

The four jobs inside AI search optimization

  1. Measure. Track a set of real buyer prompts across engines and record whether you are mentioned, where, and how.
  2. Diagnose. Find out why. Are the AI crawlers reaching your pages? Which sources does the assistant cite instead of yours? Are third-party sites naming you at all?
  3. Create and fix. Publish content that fills the gaps the data shows, and repair crawl and structure problems.
  4. Attribute. Connect AI-referred visits to conversions, so the work has a business case.

Most tools cover job one. Fewer cover the other three. That gap is the main thing to look for when you compare platforms.

What the tools offer

Here is how the main options map to those four jobs, using the facts in our catalog. Prices are monthly and were read in October 2026, so check the vendor page before buying.

Promptwatch is where we would point most teams first, because it is the platform that handles all four jobs without bolting on other products. It monitors the real interfaces of ChatGPT (Search), Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Amazon Alexa and Meta AI, and tracks further models via API. On the diagnosis side, Agent Analytics shows IP-verified AI crawler logs, with a crawl-to-citation path and error tracking, and the citation reports go down to page, Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn and offsite-mention level. On the action side, the Action Board produces a prioritized to-do list and Agent Chat answers questions against live data. Visitor analytics ties AI-referred traffic to conversions.

AthenaHQ is the closest on workflow. It was built by former Google Search and DeepMind engineers and puts its weight on turning gaps into assigned actions. It is credit-based at Starter, where one credit equals one AI response, so heavy tracking can use the allowance quickly. Its listing shows no AI crawler-log product.

Scrunch AI takes a different angle: it serves AI-optimized versions of pages to LLM crawlers without changing what people see. That is an interesting lever, and its Core plan covers four LLMs, so engine coverage is narrower unless you move to Enterprise.

Profound is positioned as enterprise marketing agents for AEO, content and PR, and AI search is one channel among several. Its Enterprise contracts start around $40,000 a year per our existing entry, which makes it a different category of purchase.

What AI search optimization cannot do

It cannot guarantee a recommendation. No platform can, and any vendor that implies otherwise is selling hope. Engines change how they select sources, answers vary from one asking to the next, and a competitor may simply have a better page. What optimization can do is raise the odds, show you what is blocking you, and tell you whether your changes moved anything.

It also does not make weak content good. If your pages say the same thing as ten others, there is no reason for an assistant to prefer yours.

A first-week plan

  • Write 30 to 50 prompts your buyers would plausibly ask, mixing category questions, comparisons and brand queries.
  • Run them across the engines your buyers use and note where you appear.
  • Check whether AI crawlers can reach your key pages. Free tools exist for this: Promptwatch offers an Agentic Readiness Check and a no-login AI Visibility Report.
  • Pick the three biggest gaps and fix those first.
  • Set up visitor tracking so you can see what AI-referred visits do.

Who should pick which

  • You want measurement, diagnosis, content and attribution in one product: Promptwatch.
  • Your team will work an action queue every day: AthenaHQ.
  • You want crawler-side page serving and can accept fewer engines on the entry plan: Scrunch AI.
  • You are a large enterprise buying a marketing agent program: Profound.

Start with measurement, because you cannot optimize a number you have never seen.
