What's the difference between an AI mention and an AI citation?
An AI mention names your brand in an answer; an AI citation links to your page as a source. Here is why the gap matters and which tools measure each one.
The short answer: an AI mention is your brand being named in an AI-generated answer. An AI citation is the engine pointing to one of your pages as a source for that answer. They often travel together, but they are different events, they come from different causes and they need different fixes.
Mention: the engine says your name
A mention happens when ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot or Google AI Overviews writes your brand into the text of an answer. "For small teams, tools like A, B and your brand are common picks" is a mention. The reader may never click anything. Mentions are the closest thing AI search has to brand awareness and shortlist presence.
Typical mention metrics are a visibility score (how often you appear across a prompt set), share of voice (your mentions against competitors'), position in the answer (first named or fifth) and sentiment (how the answer describes you).
Citation: the engine shows its source
A citation is a link or source reference attached to the answer. If the engine cites your pricing page, your guide or a review of you on a third-party site, that URL is a citation. Citations are what send actual visits and what show which pages the engine trusted.
Typical citation metrics are citation count by page and domain, citation rate (how often a page is cited when it is retrieved), the position of the source in the list and which source types win in your category: your site, review sites, Reddit, YouTube or news.
The four combinations
| Mentioned | Cited | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| Yes | Yes | The engine knows you and trusts your page. Protect it. |
| Yes | No | The engine knows you from elsewhere, perhaps third-party pages, but your own pages are not the source. |
| No | Yes | Your content is used as a source but the answer does not name you. Often a weak brand signal or a generic page. |
| No | No | You are absent. Check crawler access and content gaps first. |
There is also a quieter case: your brand is named on a third-party page that the engine cites, without linking to you. Promptwatch calls these offsite mentions, and they are a strong hint about where to earn coverage.
Why the difference matters
Fixing a missing mention and fixing a missing citation are different jobs. A missing mention is usually an authority and coverage problem: not enough credible sources describe you for the category. A missing citation is usually a page problem: the engine could not fetch the page, did not find a clear answer on it, or preferred a competitor's page.
A tool that only counts mentions cannot tell you which case you are in. That is the practical gap between simple prompt trackers and fuller platforms.
Tools compared on both sides
| Tool | Mentions | Citations | Crawler logs | Starting price (from our catalog) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Promptwatch | Visibility Score, share of voice, sentiment, position | Page and domain level, Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, offsite mentions, Page Tracker | Yes, IP-verified, from Professional ($245/mo) | Free Explore plan; paid from $95/mo |
| AthenaHQ | GEO score, sentiment | Action Center for fixes; Athena Citation Engine is Enterprise only | Not listed | Starter $295/mo |
| Scrunch AI | Prompt tracking, sentiment, competitor benchmarking | Site audits and insights | AI agent and bot traffic reporting | Core $250/mo |
| Profound | Answer Engine Insights | Citation share and answer-level analytics | Agent Analytics | Enterprise custom (earlier estimate about $40k a year) |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | Brand and competitor mention share | Cited sources, YouTube and Reddit | AI crawler activity reporting | Index from $199/mo |
| HubSpot AEO | Visibility score across 3 engines | Citation analysis | Not published | $50/mo |
Ahrefs Brand Radar models prompts from keyword data rather than real conversational queries, and an independent January 2026 test, as recorded in our catalog, found it reported 3 ChatGPT mentions where manual checks verified 123. Treat any index-style figure as directional.
Why Promptwatch is the one to try first
Promptwatch measures both sides and then explains the gap. Its Agent Analytics shows a crawl-to-citation path with a citation rate per page: which bots fetched the page, whether it was then cited, and what errors blocked it. 360 Insights joins crawler logs, citation clicks and AI-referred visits per page. Visitor analytics adds conversions, so you can see whether a citation produced anything. For most teams that diagnostic chain is the deciding factor, because the pure trackers stop at "were we mentioned?".
AthenaHQ and Scrunch AI are the other dedicated AI-search platforms worth shortlisting. Profound is better understood as enterprise marketing agents than as a tracker. HubSpot AEO and Ahrefs are fine first signals if you already use them.
How to use the distinction in practice
Track both numbers for the same prompt set and look at the combination. If mentions rise while citations stay flat, invest in your own pages and technical access. If citations rise without mentions, work on brand signals and clearer naming on those pages. If both are flat, start with crawler access and the content gap.
One caution: no tool can promise that a mention or citation will appear. Answers shift between runs, so judge trends over weeks, not single checks.
