Why is my competitor's brand mentioned in AI answers but mine isn't?
Why is my competitor's brand mentioned in AI answers but mine isn't? Six common causes, how to diagnose each, and the tools that show the evidence, Promptwatch first.
It is a frustrating thing to see. You ask ChatGPT for the best option in your category, and your biggest competitor is named while you are not. Often the competitor is not even better. So what is going on?
There is rarely one cause, and nobody outside the AI companies can see inside the models. But the visible causes fall into a short list, and each one leaves evidence you can check. This guide walks through the six most common, how to tell which one applies to you, and which tools show the evidence. Promptwatch covers the most of them in one place, so it leads the tool comparison. No tool can promise to put you in the answer, though, and neither can we.
Cause 1: the engines cannot read your pages
AI engines use crawlers: GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others. If your robots.txt blocks them, if your pages need heavy JavaScript to show content, or if your server returns errors to bots, you may be invisible regardless of quality.
How to check: read your robots.txt, then look at crawler logs for real bot visits and errors. Promptwatch's Agent Analytics shows IP-verified AI crawler logs with failure explanations, so you can tell a blocked page from an ignored one. Its free Agentic Readiness Check is a quick first test.
Cause 2: the competitor is cited and you are not
Mentions often follow citations. If the engine pulls from a comparison article, a review page or a forum thread that names your competitor and not you, the model repeats that. The fix is not on your site.
How to check: open the sources behind the answers for your tracked prompts. Promptwatch reports citations at page and domain level, and its Page Tracker lets you follow a competitor's specific URLs. The offsite mentions report shows places where a brand is named on a third-party page without a link.
Cause 3: you have no page that answers the question
Engines split a prompt into sub-queries. If your site has no clear answer to those sub-questions, the competitor's page wins by default.
How to check: look at query fan-outs for the prompt, then compare them with your coverage. Promptwatch's content gap analysis gives coverage scores and its Answer Gap Report shows where answers are missing.
Cause 4: weaker third-party presence
Engines lean on Reddit, YouTube, review sites and news. A competitor with a long history of discussion in those places has more material to draw on.
How to check: use Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citation reports. Promptwatch includes a separate report for each.
Cause 5: the engine has your facts wrong, or thin
If the engine knows little about your product, or has outdated information, it may leave you out or describe you badly.
How to check: read the full responses for brand prompts, and look at sentiment. Promptwatch scores each response from 1 to 100 and gives a weekly AI summary, and the Brand Book defines what counts as a mention.
Cause 6: it is partly noise
AI answers vary from run to run. A competitor named once in a manual check may be named in only a share of runs. Without a stable prompt set run daily, you might be reacting to a single sample.
How to check: run the same prompts repeatedly. Promptwatch runs prompt panels daily per model, country and language, and shows Share of Voice and Position in Answer against named competitors, with a heatmap that compares any two dimensions.
Tools that help with diagnosis

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Promptwatch | Yes, with heatmap | Page and domain level | From Professional | Yes | Free; $95/mo |
| AthenaHQ | GEO score and competitors | Citation Engine on Enterprise | Not published | Action Center | $295/mo |
| Scrunch AI | Competitor benchmarking | Insights | Bot traffic reporting | Recommendations | $250/mo |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | Brand and competitor mention share | Yes | AI crawler activity | No | With Ahrefs; $199/mo |
| Rankscale | Competitor comparison | Citation analysis | No | Page audits | $20/mo (yearly) |
A diagnosis order that saves time
- Confirm the gap across several runs and several engines. One answer is not evidence.
- Check crawler access.
- Compare the sources cited for your competitor and for you.
- Look at the sub-queries and your coverage.
- Check third-party presence.
- Pick one fix, make it, record the date and watch the trend.
Who should pick which
If you want to diagnose across all six causes in one place, Promptwatch is the better fit. If you mostly need competitor share and an action list, AthenaHQ or Scrunch AI are workable at their price points. If you already pay for Ahrefs and want a light view, use Brand Radar. If budget matters most, Rankscale gives a basic trend.
A word on expectations
Fixing the cause improves the odds. It does not guarantee a mention, because the engines decide, and they change. Treat each fix as a test, and judge it over weeks. Often the quickest win is the least glamorous one: unblocking a crawler or getting named on one source the engines already trust.
