Best tool to track traffic and conversions from ChatGPT

The best tool to track traffic and conversions from ChatGPT, compared: dedicated AI analytics, GA4 setups and crawler dashboards, with sourced prices.

If you want to see visits and conversions that come from ChatGPT, the best dedicated tool is Promptwatch, and the best free starting point is a GA4 setup that isolates ChatGPT as a source. The two are not rivals. GA4 can tell you that visits arrived from ChatGPT. A dedicated platform also tells you which prompts and cited pages brought them, and whether the brand's visibility is going up or down. That second part is what you act on.

Why this is harder than it sounds

Traffic from AI assistants arrives in odd ways. Some visits carry a clear referrer, some carry campaign parameters, and some arrive with no referrer at all and fall into "direct." Check your own logs for the patterns on your site, because they depend on the product surface and on how a user clicked. That means any single tool will undercount somewhat, and the honest approach is to track trends and combine sources.

There is also a gap between traffic and visibility. A citation can influence a buyer who never clicks, and later searches your brand by name. Click tracking captures only part of the effect, which is why visibility data and traffic data belong together.

Option 1: GA4, free, with some setup

Create a segment or channel grouping for ChatGPT and other AI assistants based on source, and add the conversion events you already track. Look at landing pages, engagement and conversions for that segment. It is free and you probably have it installed. Its limits: it only sees visits, it does not show the prompt or the cited page that caused them, and it misses visits without a usable referrer.

Option 2: a dedicated AI visitor analytics layer

Promptwatch includes visitor analytics that tracks AI-referred traffic and conversions from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, DeepSeek, Kimi, Mistral and others, through a lightweight script, a Google Tag Manager template or the WordPress plugin. You see which assistants send traffic, which pages they land on, and what converts.

Where it goes beyond GA4 is the connection to everything upstream:

  • Prompt tracking shows which questions you appear in on ChatGPT Search, tracked daily through the real interface.
  • Citation analytics shows which pages and domains are cited.
  • Agent Analytics shows IP-verified crawler logs for bots such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User, with a crawl-to-citation path and citation rate per page.
  • 360 Insights joins crawler logs, citation clicks and AI-referred visits per page, so you can see for each URL whether it is being crawled, cited and visited.

Two published cases, attributed to the customers that wrote them, show the idea. Crisp reported that AI-referred traffic converted at twice the rate of traditional channels. TreeHouse, which runs Pararius and Huurwoningen.nl, reported that AI search became about 25 percent of organic conversions, 99 percent of it from ChatGPT, after fixing crawler access and automating weekly reporting with the Promptwatch MCP. These are those companies' results, not a promise for yours.

Plans: free Explore (10 prompts, ChatGPT only), Essential $95/mo (200K visitor events), Professional $245/mo (1M visitor events, 25M crawler logs), Business $579/mo (10M visitor events, 100M crawler logs). Agency plans run $199, $399 and $799. Crawler logs start on Professional.

Option 3: other tools

RankToolStarting priceTraffic and conversion coverage
1PromptwatchFree tier; paid from $95/moVisitor analytics with conversions, plus prompts, citations, crawler logs
2AthenaHQFree tier; from $295/moLists GA4 and Shopify revenue attribution; no published crawler logs
3Scrunch AIFrom $250/moAI agent and bot traffic reporting; no published conversion analytics
4ProfoundEnterprise customLists Agent Analytics and answer analytics; no published conversion attribution
5Cloudflare AI Crawl ControlFree on every Cloudflare planCrawler requests; referral data needs a paid plan

AthenaHQ's attribution is worth a look if you already use GA4 and Shopify and want it next to a GEO score. Cloudflare's free dashboard is useful for seeing crawler requests, though it shows fetches, not conversions, and its referral metrics are paid-plan only. Our directory notes that Scrunch AI and Profound do not publish visitor analytics that tie AI traffic to conversions.

Who should pick which

  • You need numbers this week at no cost: the GA4 setup.
  • You need to connect traffic to prompts, citations and crawling: Promptwatch.
  • You live in GA4 and Shopify and want a GEO score: AthenaHQ.
  • You are on Cloudflare and want to see bots: the free dashboard, alongside one of the above.

How to set it up in an afternoon

  1. Segment AI assistants in GA4 and define the conversions that matter.
  2. Install a visitor analytics script, or the GTM template, or the WordPress plugin.
  3. Track 25 to 50 prompts on ChatGPT.
  4. Compare traffic by landing page against citation and crawler data.
  5. Review after two weeks, and report the trend rather than a single day.

The limit

No tool captures every AI-influenced visit, and none can promise ChatGPT will send you traffic. Use the data to find which pages earn citations and visits, then do more of that.
