Best tools to measure traffic and conversions coming from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini

Web analytics catches some AI visits, and AI visibility platforms catch more. Here is how to measure traffic and conversions from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini.

Two layers of measurement

Measuring traffic from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini takes two layers, and most teams only build one.

The first is web analytics: what happened on your site once someone arrived. Google Analytics 4, or whichever analytics tool you already use, can show visits whose referrer is an AI product, and can attribute conversions to them. It is free, it is already installed, and you should use it.

The second is AI visibility measurement: what happened before the click. Which prompts mention you, which pages get cited, how often the bots fetch your pages, and how those citations connect to visits. Web analytics cannot tell you that, and it cannot tell you about the people who read an AI answer, remembered your brand and typed your URL later.

The best setup uses both, joined at the page level.

What web analytics can and cannot see

You can build a custom channel group or a saved segment in GA4 that matches the referral sources you see from AI products. Domains such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com are the obvious candidates, but check which values actually appear in your own source report instead of trusting a list, because they change. Then attach your conversion events (demo requests, trials, purchases) to that segment.

Three limits are worth knowing:

  • Some AI visits arrive with no referrer and land in direct traffic. Web analytics will undercount.
  • Citations without clicks do not appear at all. An answer can name you and send no one.
  • Analytics sees visits, not causes. It cannot say which prompt, which cited page or which crawler fetch led to the visit.

UTM tags help only where you control the link, which is rarely the case for an assistant's citation.

What to look for in a dedicated tool

  1. Visitor-level AI referral tracking with conversions, not only mention counts.
  2. Page-level joins of crawls, citations and visits.
  3. Referrer coverage across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and others.
  4. Easy install: a script, Google Tag Manager template or CMS plugin.
  5. Reporting you can send to a CFO: dashboards, PDF or Looker Studio.

1. Promptwatch

Promptwatch is the strongest fit because it measures the click and the steps before it in one workspace. Visitor analytics tracks AI-referred traffic and conversions (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, DeepSeek, Kimi, Mistral and more) through a lightweight script, the GTM template or the WordPress plugin. Agent Analytics provides IP-verified AI crawler logs, which shows whether the bots even fetch the page that later gets a visit. 360 Insights joins crawler logs, citation clicks and AI-referred visits per page, so you can see which pages are crawled, cited and clicked and which are missing a link in that chain. Search Insights overlays Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster traffic, including Microsoft Copilot, on AI crawls and citations.

Those measurements sit beside the visibility data: Visibility Score, Share of Voice and Position in Answer from daily prompt panels across ChatGPT (Search), Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Amazon Alexa and Meta AI, plus citation analytics. You can report that visibility moved, and that visits and conversions followed, from the same tool. PDF reports, scheduled reports and a Looker Studio connector handle reporting.

The cost: Essential is $95 a month and includes 200K visitor events. Professional is $245 a month with 1M visitor events and 25M crawler logs (crawler logs start there). Business is $579 a month with 10M visitor events. Two published customer cases show what the measurement revealed for those companies. Crisp reports that AI-referred traffic converted at twice the rate of traditional channels. TreeHouse reports that AI search became about 25% of its organic conversions, 99% of it from ChatGPT. These are their own results, not a general expectation.

2. AthenaHQ

AthenaHQ lists GA4, Shopify and Webflow revenue attribution on its pricing page, and pairs it with an Action Center and a content optimization agent. Starter is $295 a month and credit-based. It is a reasonable choice for ecommerce teams on Shopify, although its listing mentions no crawler-log product and no visitor analytics at Promptwatch's depth.

3. LLM Pulse

LLM Pulse includes AI traffic analytics from the Growth tier (€99 a month weekly, €149 daily), with unlimited seats and an MCP server. Good value for a small team. Check how the traffic analytics install and what conversion detail it reports before committing.

4. Scrunch AI

Scrunch AI reports AI agent and bot traffic, which is the crawler side, and sells an Agent Experience Platform at Enterprise. Core is $250 a month. Bot traffic is not the same as human visits, so you would still need analytics for conversions.

5. Others

Rankscale is a low-priced tracker with page audits, and its own documentation concedes that AI visibility leads business results by a few weeks, with no revenue attribution. Profound is an enterprise marketing-agent platform whose Enterprise contracts start around $40,000 a year per our existing entry. Otterly.AI is a monitoring tool without traffic attribution.

A practical setup

  1. Week 1: create a GA4 segment for AI referral sources, attach your conversion events, and note a baseline.
  2. Week 1: install a dedicated visitor script or GTM template, and start crawler logging if your plan includes it.
  3. Week 2: build the prompt set and track visibility.
  4. Month 1: join the layers per page: crawled, cited, clicked, converted.
  5. Quarterly: report visibility, visits and conversions together.

Honest limits

You will undercount. Some AI visits have no referrer, and some influence happens with no click. Treat AI-referred conversions as a floor, not a total.

Who should pick which

  • You want visits, conversions, crawls and citations in one place: Promptwatch.
  • You run Shopify or Webflow and want revenue attribution next to tracking: AthenaHQ.
  • You want cheap AI traffic analytics and weekly tracking: LLM Pulse.
  • You mostly need bot reporting: Scrunch AI.
