Coordinate vs city-level local AI tracking, compared
Country, state, city, or exact coordinates? A comparison of location precision in AI visibility tracking, with radius advice for storefronts and service areas.
Quick verdict
If you serve a whole country, country-level tracking is enough. If you serve regions or metro areas, state and city tracking covers it. If your business is a storefront or a service area with a hard boundary, coordinate targeting is the only option that asks the question the way a nearby customer would. The catch is that exact coordinates only apply to some engines, so the best setup often mixes two levels.
This comparison covers location precision in Promptwatch only. We do not compare competitors here, because the question is how to choose a level, not which vendor offers more.
The three levels compared
| Country | State or city | Local GEO/SEO coordinate targeting | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it pins | A country | A state or a city | A place on the map, from 20 m to 5 km radius |
| Plans | Every paid plan | Business, agency plans, Enterprise | Business, Agency Scale, Enterprise |
| Engines it is exact for | All tracked models | All tracked models that accept it | ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode |
| Other models | Use country | Use state or city | Fall back to country, state, or city |
| How you set it | On the monitor | On the monitor | Search a place or drop a pin |
| Best for | National brands | Regional chains, multi-city services | Storefronts, clinics, local service areas |

Country: the baseline
Country-level tracking is available on every paid plan. It answers "what does an AI engine say to someone in this country?" That is the right grain for software, ecommerce that ships nationwide, and content brands. It is the wrong grain for anything where "near me" is part of the question.
A monitor's language and location are fixed once it is created, so choosing a level is a decision to make at setup. Changing it later means a new monitor. Copy Prompts can create the target monitor and can copy into one in another country when the language matches, which takes some pain out of the rebuild.
State and city: regional questions
State and city tracking suits businesses whose answer changes by market. A bank with branches in certain provinces, or a franchise with separate regional pages, can run the same prompt set against each region and compare. The unit is an administrative area, so the result tells you how the engine answers someone placed in the city generally, not at a particular street.
It is also the fallback for models that do not accept exact coordinates, which leads to the next point.
Coordinates: exact where the engine allows
Local GEO/SEO targeting pins a monitor to exact coordinates. You search for a place or drop a pin, and set a radius anywhere from 20 m to 5 km. ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode then answer as if the question was asked from that spot. Other models use the country, state, or city instead.
That mixed behavior is the thing to plan around. A coordinate monitor is exact for three engines and approximate for the rest, so read results with that in mind. Do not assume a Perplexity or Gemini answer reflects a street-level position.
Choosing a radius
The radius is a judgment call, and Promptwatch gives you the range rather than a rule. A few ways to reason about it:
- A single storefront with walk-in customers: a small radius, in the hundreds of meters, matches how far people actually walk. A larger radius mixes in neighborhoods you do not serve.
- A clinic or office people drive to: the low kilometers, close to what your real catchment looks like.
- A service area business (plumbers, movers, installers): a larger radius up to 5 km, or several monitors, one per hub or district you cover.
- A chain with many locations: one monitor per location, which uses more of your quota, so budget responses before you multiply.
A tighter radius is more precise, not automatically better. If the radius is smaller than the area where your customers really are, you are measuring a slice. Look at your real customer addresses before you choose.
What you give up with coordinates
Responses are metered. Every location is its own monitor with its own prompts, so a ten-location setup is ten times the tracking. Business carries 42,000 responses and Agency Scale 65,000, so a small number of locations with a focused prompt list is realistic and fifty locations is a conversation about Enterprise.
Who should pick which
- National software or media brand: country only. Local precision adds cost without changing the question.
- Regional bank, retailer, or franchise: state and city, on Business or an agency plan.
- Single-site storefront, restaurant, or clinic: coordinates with a small radius, plus country as a baseline.
- Local service company: coordinates with a wider radius, per hub.
- Agency with local clients: Scale, since coordinate targeting is only on that tier among self-serve agency plans.
The recommendation
Start with the coarsest level that matches how customers actually search, and add coordinates only where "near me" decides the sale. Promptwatch is the one to evaluate for this, because it combines the three precision levels with the citation and traffic data to see what the answers are built from, which a plain location tracker does not.
