Do review sites like G2 and Capterra help a software brand get recommended by ChatGPT?

G2 and Capterra pages can feed AI answers, but only your own citation data shows whether they do for your prompts. Here is how to check and what to do.

The honest answer: they can, and you should verify it for your category

Review sites are third-party pages with structured, comparative information about software. That is exactly the kind of source an assistant that searches the web is likely to retrieve when someone asks "what is the best tool for X". So yes, G2 and Capterra pages can show up as citations, and a strong profile gives an assistant more good material to work with.

What nobody can truthfully tell you is how much they matter for your category, your prompts and your engines. We are not going to quote a study or a percentage, because we cannot source one here and a number without a checkable method is worth little. The better move is to measure it yourself. It takes an afternoon, and it replaces speculation with a list of the domains that assistants actually cite for your buyer prompts.

Why the answer differs by prompt

Three things change what gets cited:

  • Prompt type. "Best CRM for a 20-person agency" pulls roundups and review sites. "How do I configure webhooks in Product X" pulls documentation. "Is Product X secure" pulls trust pages and news.
  • Engine. Each assistant retrieves differently, so a domain can be common in one and rare in another.
  • Category. In crowded software categories, review sites compete with comparison blogs, Reddit threads, YouTube videos and vendor pages. In a niche category with few reviews, there may be little for an assistant to use.

If you only look at one engine, you will draw the wrong conclusion about all of them.

What to do on the review sites themselves

These are ordinary good practice, and none of it depends on any claim about AI:

  1. Complete the profile. Accurate category, current pricing description, real feature lists, screenshots and integrations. An incomplete profile gives an assistant less to quote.
  2. Keep facts consistent. Plan names and pricing should match your own site. Contradictions across sources make wrong answers more likely.
  3. Collect genuine reviews. Ask real customers, and respond to critical ones. Do not buy or fabricate reviews, which is against the platforms' rules and wrong in any case.
  4. Pick the right categories. Being listed in the category the buyer's prompt uses matters more than being listed in many.
  5. Do not stop there. Review sites are one source. Reddit, YouTube, comparison articles and your own documentation all feed answers too.

How to measure whether review sites matter for you

You need to see which domains assistants cite for your prompts, and whether your review pages are among them. A practical sequence:

  1. Build a prompt set of the real questions buyers ask, including category, comparison and "alternatives to" queries.
  2. Track it across engines for a few weeks.
  3. Look at domain-level citations. See whether g2.com or capterra.com appears, for which prompts, and how often compared with Reddit, YouTube and competitors' own sites.
  4. Check whether your own profile page or a competitor's profile is the specific URL being cited.
  5. Check whether you are mentioned on third-party pages without a link.

Promptwatch does this directly. Its citation analytics work at page and domain level, so you can see whether a review site is cited and which specific profile URL. Page Tracker lets you follow specific URLs, yours or a competitor's, which is a clean way to watch a competitor's review profile. The offsite mentions report shows where your brand is named in third-party pages without a link, and separate Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citation reports show the other sources competing with review sites. Citation Trends adds content type and source type breakdowns, so you can compare "review site" citations to "forum" or "blog" citations over time. Monitoring runs daily per model, country and language across ChatGPT (Search), Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Amazon Alexa and Meta AI.

A transparency note, since we are discussing review sites: Promptwatch is rated 4.7/5 on G2 by its own account, and Essential and Professional customers who leave a G2 review earn extra Agent Credits, so that rating is not entirely unprompted. Read reviews of any vendor with that in mind.

How other tools compare on source analysis

AthenaHQ tracks how a brand appears in AI answers and turns gaps into actions, with Starter at $295 a month on credits. Our catalog notes it offers no Reddit monitoring, which limits comparison between review sites and forums.

Scrunch AI covers four LLMs on Core at $250 a month and reports on agent and bot traffic. Its listing does not document citation analytics at page, Reddit and YouTube depth.

Ahrefs Brand Radar reports on AI crawler activity, YouTube and Reddit sources, and includes a pre-collected index of prompts. Custom Prompts come with paid Ahrefs plans from Lite up, and the AI Visibility Index starts at $199 a month. It is a good fit if your team already lives in Ahrefs.

Profound offers citation share and answer-level analytics, with Enterprise contracts starting around $40,000 a year per our existing entry.

What the data might tell you

Three outcomes are common, and each leads somewhere different:

  • Review sites appear often for your prompts. Invest in the profiles and in getting real reviews. Watch your competitors' profile URLs.
  • They rarely appear. Your money is better spent elsewhere, probably on your own comparison and documentation pages, or on forums.
  • They appear, but not for you. An assistant retrieved the review page and named someone else. Read the page. The gap is usually in categories, features listed or review volume.

No platform can promise that fixing any of these gets you recommended. They raise the odds and give you a clear next step.
