How do SEO teams measure whether their brand shows up in answers from ChatGPT and Google AI Mode?

SEO teams measure AI answer visibility with fixed prompt panels, mention and citation metrics, share of voice and traffic data. Here is the method and the tools compared.

SEO teams measure AI answer visibility the same way they once measured rankings: define a fixed set of queries, check them on a schedule, record the outcomes and watch the trend. The difference is that an AI answer is generated, not ranked, so the outcomes are different (mentions, citations, position in the answer) and the data has to be sampled repeatedly because answers vary from run to run.

Step 1: define the prompt panel

A panel is the AI equivalent of a keyword list. Most teams build 30 to 200 prompts across four groups: category queries ("best X for Y"), comparison queries, problem queries and brand queries. They tag prompts by topic, intent and sometimes persona and country, so results can be sliced later. Real data on what people ask helps. Tools with prompt volume data and suggestions from Search Console or People Also Ask make the panel less of a guess.

Step 2: run it consistently, per engine

ChatGPT and Google AI Mode behave differently, so they are measured separately and compared. Running the same panel daily or weekly produces a trend, and repeated runs reduce the noise from answer variation. Teams that sample once a month usually cannot tell a real drop from randomness.

Step 3: record the right metrics

MetricWhat it shows
Mention rate / visibility scoreHow often your brand is named across the panel
Share of voiceYour mentions against competitors'
Position in answerFirst named or fifth
SentimentHow the answer describes you
CitationsWhich of your pages are used as sources
Citation rateHow often a retrieved page ends up cited
AI-referred visits and conversionsWhether any of it brings business

Mentions describe awareness, and citations describe which pages the engines trust. Teams that track only one of them miss half the diagnosis.

Step 4: add technical and traffic data

Visibility numbers do not explain themselves. Teams add:

  • Crawler logs, to see whether AI bots (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, Google-Agent and others) reach their pages.
  • Analytics referrers, to segment AI assistant traffic.
  • Search Console and Bing Webmaster data, to compare classic search performance with AI visibility.

A good report shows a four to eight week trend, competitor comparison, the biggest movers by prompt and topic, and the actions taken. It states that answers vary and that the panel is a sample.

A methodology warning from our catalog: Ahrefs Brand Radar's index prompts are modeled from keyword data, and an independent January 2026 test found it reported 3 ChatGPT mentions where manual checks verified 123. Treat index-style numbers as directional, and prefer panels of real prompts for decisions.

Why SEO teams end up on Promptwatch

Promptwatch fits the measurement workflow end to end. It runs prompt panels daily per model, country and language, with Visibility Score, Share of Voice, Sentiment and Position in Answer. Custom dashboards, a heatmap comparing any two dimensions (for instance brands against models) and an A/B period comparison cover the reporting. A Brand Book sets what counts as a mention.

Beyond mentions, citation analytics gives page and domain level data, and Agent Analytics provides IP-verified crawler logs with a citation rate per page. 360 Insights joins crawler logs, citation clicks and AI-referred visits per page, and Search Insights overlays Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster data. Looker Studio connector, PDF reports and an API and MCP server handle delivery to stakeholders.

It tracks Google AI Mode and AI Overviews and ChatGPT Search through their real UIs. Claude, DeepSeek, Mistral and Grok are API models, which matters if a team compares them with what people see.

Crawler logs start on the Professional plan at $245 a month, so teams that want the technical layer should plan for that.

Who should pick which

  • Need the full chain from visibility to traffic: Promptwatch.
  • Prefer an action queue: AthenaHQ.
  • Already in Ahrefs or Semrush and want directional data: those add-ons.
  • Want a weekly, low-cost tracker: LLM Pulse.
  • Large enterprise with a custom budget: Profound.

Limits worth stating in every report

Panels are samples. Engines change their behavior without notice. And no tool can guarantee a mention. Report trends and be clear about the margin of error.
