Best platform to monitor citations in ChatGPT and Perplexity (2026 comparison)
Compare the best platform to monitor citations in ChatGPT and Perplexity: citation depth, source reports, plan limits and published prices, ranked for 2026 buyers.
A mention and a citation are not the same thing. A mention means the engine named your brand in the text. A citation means it linked to, or drew on, a specific page as a source. For ChatGPT search and Perplexity, citations are what send visits, and they are also the clearest signal of which pages and domains the engine trusts on a topic. So the right monitoring platform is the one that records citations at page level, not the one with the prettiest mention chart.
This comparison ranks platforms on citation monitoring for those two engines. We used plan data read in late October 2026 and the Promptwatch fact sheet.
What good citation monitoring looks like
Look for these capabilities, in roughly this order of importance.
- Page and domain level. Which exact URLs get cited, and which domains, for each prompt.
- Your pages versus everyone else's. Cited sources include your own site, competitors and third parties such as Reddit and YouTube.
- Position and frequency. Where the citation appears and how often it recurs over time.
- Both engines, tracked from the real interface. ChatGPT and Perplexity cite differently, so the two need separate views.
- A link to traffic. A citation that nobody clicks is still useful, but a citation that brings visits is the one to protect.
- Crawl evidence. Citations only happen to pages the engine can fetch.
The ranking
1. Promptwatch
Promptwatch tracks ChatGPT (Search) and Perplexity through real-interface monitoring, among other live-search platforms. Its citation analytics report page- and domain-level citations with URL positions, and a Page Tracker follows specific URLs, yours or a competitor's. Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citation reports show the community and video sources behind the answers. Offsite mentions find where your brand is named on third-party pages without a link. Citation Trends classifies each citation by content type and source type, and shows per page the first time it was cited, ramp-up days, peak citation rate and decay half-life.
That last part is what monitoring tools usually lack. IP-verified AI crawler logs show whether ChatGPT-User, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User actually fetch the page, and a crawl-to-citation path reports a citation rate per page. Visitor analytics attribute AI-referred traffic and conversions to the engine that sent it. So you can follow a page from crawled, to cited, to visited. Entry is the free Explore plan (ChatGPT only, 10 prompts) and Essential at $95 a month. Crawler logs start on Professional ($245).
2. AthenaHQ
AthenaHQ tracks 11 models on Starter at $295 a month and credits one response per credit. It has an Action Center for optimization tasks. Our entry notes no Reddit monitoring and no published crawler-log product, and the Athena Citation Engine is Enterprise only.
3. Scrunch AI
Scrunch AI Core is $250 a month and covers four LLMs, including ChatGPT and Perplexity, with 125 prompts and 5,000 responses. It includes AI agent and bot traffic reporting, and its Enterprise tier adds nine LLMs and the Agent Experience Platform. Our entry does not document citation analytics at page-level depth.
4. Mentionable
Mentionable tracks seven engines daily from 79 EUR a month excluding tax. It records which domains the engines reuse as sources and captures the hidden fan-out queries ChatGPT and Perplexity run before answering. It does not publish crawler logs or conversion tracking.
5. Ceyo
Ceyo maps citation sources by type (owned, editorial, review, community) and captures fan-outs and version drift, from the real interfaces of eight engines. Plans cap the number of models at two, three or four.
6. Profound
Profound reports citation share and answer-level analytics. It is sold as marketing agents for content, demand and PR on a custom Enterprise plan, historically estimated around $40k a year.
Also in the field
Ahrefs Brand Radar reports on Reddit, YouTube and AI crawler activity, with an index that models its prompts from keyword data. Allmond includes ChatGPT and Perplexity on every plan from $29 a month, with full response and citation access, but runs weekly or monthly and meters by scan. Semrush AI Toolkit covers ChatGPT and Perplexity among its engines from $99 a month per domain.

Who should pick which
You want to see which pages are cited and why, then fix what is missing: Promptwatch. Citation reports plus crawler logs plus visitor analytics is the combination that closes the loop.
You want one action queue and can pay enterprise prices: AthenaHQ.
You want a cheap view of cited domains and fan-outs: Mentionable or Allmond, accepting what they leave out.
The limits of citation monitoring
Citations vary between runs, between countries and over time, so read them as trends across a fixed prompt panel. A page that is not cited this week may be cited next week with no change on your side. Monitoring cannot make an engine cite you. It can show which sources win for your prompts, whether the engines can read your pages, and which of your pages are earning visits, which is the starting point for deciding what to change.
