How is GEO different from SEO? What changes and what stays the same
How generative engine optimization differs from SEO: goals, metrics, content and tooling, plus what carries over, and which platforms measure GEO work.
The short answer
SEO tries to rank pages in a list of links. GEO, generative engine optimization, tries to get your brand named and your pages cited inside an answer that an AI engine writes. The foundations overlap heavily: a site that crawlers can reach, pages worth citing, and a reputation that other sites confirm. What changes is how you measure success and how much you depend on sources you do not own.
The term GEO was popularized by a 2023 academic paper on generative engines, and the practice has since spread across the industry under several names: GEO, AEO, AI search optimization. The labels differ more than the work does.
Side by side
| Area | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page for a keyword | Be named or cited in a generated answer |
| Unit of work | Keyword and page | Prompt, topic and page |
| Result | A ranked list of links | A written answer, often with a few cited sources |
| Stability | Rankings move, but the list is shared | Answers vary by model, wording, place and day |
| Key metric | Position, clicks, impressions | Visibility, share of voice, citation rate, position in answer |
| Crawlers | Googlebot, Bingbot | GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others |
| Off-site role | Backlinks | Mentions and citations on Reddit, YouTube, review sites, publications |
| Traffic source | Search result clicks | Citation clicks, plus brand recall that never clicks |
What carries over
Plenty of SEO still applies. Google's Search Central guidance on its AI features reads, to us, as saying the pages involved still need to be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet, and normal quality basics apply. Technical health, clear information architecture, useful content and honest authorship help in both worlds.
What genuinely changes
Prompts replace keywords. People ask full questions, and engines split them into several sub-searches, often called query fan-outs. You optimize for a topic cluster of questions, not a single phrase.
The answer is the product. Being ranked third does not guarantee being cited. A page that states the answer directly and credibly beats a longer page that circles it.
Other people's pages matter more. Models draw on Reddit threads, YouTube videos, review sites and trade press. If those describe you accurately, models have evidence to repeat.
Measurement is harder. You cannot look up your position. You have to sample answers, repeatedly, across models.
Some value never produces a click. An engine can name your brand in an answer and the reader never visits. That is why mentions and share of voice get tracked alongside traffic.
How tools map to the difference
SEO tools measure rankings and links. GEO needs a different set.
- Prompt tracking across engines, daily.
- Citation analytics, meaning which pages and domains get cited.
- Crawler logs, for AI bots.
- Visitor analytics, for AI-referred traffic and conversions.
- Content workflow, to close gaps.
Promptwatch covers all five in one platform. It runs prompt panels daily per model, country and language and reports Visibility Score, Share of Voice, Sentiment and Position in Answer. Its citation analytics go down to page and domain, with Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports. Agent Analytics shows IP-verified AI crawler logs (from Professional, $245 a month), and visitor analytics attribute AI-referred traffic and conversions. For action, there is an Action Board, content gap analysis and content generation with publishing to WordPress, Webflow and Framer.
It also folds in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster data through Search Insights, so you see classic search and AI search side by side. That is the practical bridge between SEO and GEO.

Who should pick which
- You are an SEO team adding GEO and want one place to measure it: Promptwatch.
- You live in Semrush and want a simple AI column: its AI Toolkit, with its limits in mind.
- You will work an action queue daily: AthenaHQ.
- You are an enterprise buying agents: Profound.
What stays true
No one can guarantee a citation, and anyone who does is overselling. Do the shared work first: crawlable pages, clear answers, honest authorship. Then add the GEO layer: a prompt panel, citation tracking and crawler checks. Start with twenty prompts your buyers really ask and look at the pattern after a month.
