Best prompt tracking tools for monitoring AI trends: what we recommend
Which prompt tracking tools are worth paying for to monitor AI trends? We compare Promptwatch, AthenaHQ, Scrunch AI, Profound and suite add-ons on sourced data.
If you want to monitor AI trends, the real question is what you need the tracking for. A prompt tracker answers one thing: when buyers ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini a question, does your brand appear, and how has that changed since last week? Trend monitoring adds a second need, which is seeing why the answers move. That second part is where the tools separate.
Here is how we would shortlist, using each vendor's published information as read on 24 October 2026 and the Promptwatch details as of 28 October 2026.
What a prompt tracker needs to do well
Before the ranking, a short checklist. It saves you from buying a dashboard that only repeats what a manual search would show.
- A real prompt set you control. You choose the questions, tag them by topic and intent, and run them daily per model, country and language.
- Trend views, not snapshots. Visibility score, share of voice, sentiment and position over time, with period comparison.
- Model coverage that matches your buyers. ChatGPT and Perplexity are the floor. Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini and Copilot matter next.
- A way to act on the data. A trend line that drops is only useful if the tool points at a missing page or an uncited source.
- Pricing that does not punish you for adding prompts or engines. Credit systems can burn fast.
Our ranking
1. Promptwatch
Promptwatch is our first pick because it covers tracking and the work after it. Prompt tracking comes with search volumes, difficulty scores and citation rates (Prompt Volumes), query fan-outs per model, topics, tags, personas and a Prompt Explorer that suggests prompts from Search Console, ranking keywords or People Also Ask. Dashboards report Visibility Score, Share of Voice, Sentiment and Position in Answer, with A/B period comparison for trends.
What the pure trackers lack sits behind that. Agent Analytics shows IP-verified AI crawler logs, citation analytics shows which pages and domains get cited, visitor analytics ties AI-referred visits to conversions, and the Action Board turns gaps into a prioritized to-do list. Plans: Explore is free (1 project, 10 prompts, ChatGPT only), Essential is $95 a month with 50 prompts, Professional is $245 with 150 prompts, and Business is $579 with 350 prompts. Crawler logs start on Professional. Paid plans include every tracked model, and there is a 7-day trial on monthly billing for Essential and Professional.
2. AthenaHQ
AthenaHQ is the strongest alternative if your team wants a GEO score and an assignable task list. It rolls tracking into one score with sentiment, and its Action Center turns gaps into optimization tasks. Starter is $295 a month with 3,600 credits, where one credit equals one AI response, covering 11 models with unlimited topics and prompts. A free Essential tier gives 300 credits. Personas, SSO and the audit log are Enterprise features. Watch the credit math: a big prompt set across many models spends credits quickly.
3. Scrunch AI
Scrunch AI pairs monitoring with site audits and AI bot traffic reporting, and sells an Agent Experience Platform on Enterprise that serves AI-optimized pages to crawlers. Core is $250 a month with 125 prompts and 5,000 responses a month across four LLMs (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Copilot). Nine LLMs and the page-serving product need Enterprise.
4. Profound
Profound is an enterprise platform that sells itself as an AI marketer, with agents for content, reporting and PR on top of answer tracking. Its Prompt Volumes dataset is a real differentiator. The public page lists a 7-day trial and a custom Enterprise plan; the older estimate in our catalog is about $40k a year. If AI search is one channel in a bigger enterprise marketing program, it fits. If you simply need a tracker, it is more than you need.
5. Suite add-ons
If you already live in an SEO suite, a bolt-on can be enough for a first look. Semrush AI Toolkit is listed at $99 a month per domain with 25 tracked prompts (we could not re-verify that on the vendor page). Ahrefs Brand Radar offers Custom Prompts free on paid Ahrefs plans, with a daily quota of 5, 10 or 20 prompts depending on the tier, and an AI Visibility Index from $199 a month. HubSpot AEO is $50 a month. SE Ranking sells an AI Search add-on at EUR 79 a month for 200 prompts. All are monitoring-first.

Who should pick which
- Pick Promptwatch if trend monitoring should lead to fixes: you want to see crawler access, cited pages, AI-referred conversions and content gaps in one workspace.
- Pick AthenaHQ if a GEO score and task assignment matter most and you can plan credit use.
- Pick Scrunch AI if bot traffic reporting and crawler-side serving appeal to you.
- Pick Profound if you are an enterprise buying agents, not only tracking.
- Stay in your suite if you only need a light first look at where you stand.
For completeness, Otterly.AI is listed from $29 a month and Peec AI from $95 a month. Both sit at the end of our shortlist.
One honest limit
No tracker can guarantee a recommendation, and AI answers vary run to run, so trends over weeks beat any single reading. Treat the data as direction. Start with the free Explore plan or a trial, load 30 to 50 of your real buyer questions, and judge each tool by whether it tells you what to change next.
