Promptwatch vs Wellows (2026): seven criteria, one winner per row
Wellows is the cheaper citation tracker and Promptwatch the deeper platform. We score both on engines, citation depth, crawler logs, attribution, content, agency economics and entry price.
Quick verdict
Wellows takes two of our seven rows: entry price, and, with a caveat we explain below, the cost per unit of monitoring for small and mid-sized agencies. Promptwatch takes the other five, and those five decide whether AI search becomes a channel you can manage or stays a report you read. If your question is "which citations are we missing, and who do we email about them", Wellows answers it well for very little money. If you also need to know whether AI crawlers can reach the page, whether a citation sent a buyer, and who is going to publish the fix, Promptwatch is the one to buy.
How we scored it
One winner per criterion, decided only on what each vendor publishes. Wellows facts come from wellows.com/pricing and its llms.txt (updated 23 September 2026), both read on 25 October 2026. Promptwatch facts come from promptwatch.com/llms.txt, last checked 21 October 2026. When a vendor doesn't publish a capability, the table says "not published". That is a statement about the documentation, not a claim about the code.
The scorecard
| Criterion | Promptwatch | Wellows | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engines | ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, Llama, DeepSeek, Mistral, Copilot, AI Overviews, AI Mode on every paid plan | ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini on every plan; no Claude or Copilot | Promptwatch |
| Citation depth | Page and domain level, Reddit and YouTube citations, offsite mentions, citation type breakdowns, citation trends over time | Explicit vs implicit citations, sourced sentiment per cited page, outreach list built from cited third-party pages | Promptwatch, narrowly |
| Diagnostics and crawler logs | Agent Analytics: AI crawler logs, crawl-to-citation path, error tracking (Professional and up, every agency plan) | Not published | Promptwatch |
| Attribution | Visitor analytics with conversion tracking via script or GTM, from Essential | Not published | Promptwatch |
| Content execution | Content Agent plans, writes and publishes to Webflow, Framer or WordPress through a review inbox (Business and Enterprise) | KIVA writes a brief and draft from Search Console data and can send it to WordPress for editing | Promptwatch |
| Agency economics | Kick-off $199, Growth $399, Scale $799; unlimited projects and prompts, 10 seats | Growth $249, Scale $497 on one answer balance; unlimited projects, prompts and seats | Wellows, arguably |
| Entry price | Free Explore (ChatGPT only, 10 prompts); paid from $95/mo | $29/mo with all five engines and every feature | Wellows |
Final count: five rows to two.
The two rows Wellows wins
Entry price
The cheapest Wellows plan, Basic, is $29 a month. It is not a stripped-down tier. Every Wellows plan carries all five engines, every feature, white-label reporting and a 7-day trial, and the plans differ only in the size of a monthly balance of AI answers. Basic's 1,800 answers cover 12 prompts a day on all five engines, or 60 a day on one. That is a small prompt set, and Standard at $97 (6,500 answers, 43 prompts daily on all five) is where most real programs start. There is no free plan.
The comparison point on the other side is a free Explore plan limited to ChatGPT and 10 prompts, then Essential at $95 a month with 50 prompts, 6,000 responses and 200K visitor events. Essential buys more than tracking, but on sticker price alone this row is not close.
Agency economics
Wellows dropped per-domain pricing in September 2026. Every project draws on the same balance, and seats are unlimited, so a small agency can put fifteen clients on one plan and only pay for the answers it actually collects. Promptwatch's agency tiers also include unlimited projects and prompts, but cap seats at 10.
Here is the per-unit math from both pricing pages:
| Plan | Price a month | Monthly allowance | Roughly per 1,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wellows Growth | $249 | 18,000 answers | $13.83 |
| Wellows Scale | $497 | 36,000 answers | $13.81 |
| Promptwatch Kick-off | $199 | 10,000 responses | $19.90 |
| Promptwatch Growth | $399 | 25,000 responses | $15.96 |
| Promptwatch Scale | $799 | 65,000 responses | $12.29 |
Two caveats keep this row at "arguably". A Wellows answer (one prompt, one engine, one day) and a Promptwatch response are not guaranteed to be identical units, so read the last column as rough. And at the top tier the order flips: Agency Scale works out cheaper per unit than Wellows Scale, while also bundling 15M visitor events and 100M crawler logs. Below that tier, Wellows is cheaper per unit. Also worth knowing: when a Wellows balance runs dry, collection pauses until the billing date, and unused answers do not roll over.
The five rows that go the other way
Engines. Wellows says plainly that it does not track Claude or Microsoft Copilot, and it lists no Grok either. If part of your audience asks those assistants, Wellows has no view of what they say about you. Promptwatch runs eleven surfaces on every paid plan.
Citation depth. This one is closer than the scorecard suggests. Wellows splits citations into explicit (the engine cites your own page) and implicit (it cites a third-party page that mentions you), labels each cited page positive, neutral or negative, and turns cited third-party pages that never mention you into outreach targets with contact emails. That outreach list is the best thing in the product. Promptwatch wins on breadth: page and domain views, dedicated Reddit and YouTube citation analytics, offsite mentions, and citation trends that show how sources shift over time rather than a single count.
Diagnostics. Wellows reads the pages that get cited. It publishes nothing about whether AI crawlers can read yours. Agent Analytics logs ChatGPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, GoogleOther and the Meta AI crawler through Cloudflare, CloudFront, Fastly, Vercel, Netlify, Akamai, Google Cloud CDN or a custom HTTP feed, and shows the crawl-to-citation path plus errors. When a page you expected to be cited isn't, this is usually where the answer is.
Attribution. Wellows' own FAQ concedes that rising citations often don't appear as referral traffic, because AI answers resolve in place. That's honest, and it's also the reason attribution matters: someone will ask what the citations were worth. Promptwatch's visitor analytics connect AI-referred sessions to conversions from the Essential plan up.
Content execution. KIVA drafts against your Search Console data and hands the draft to WordPress for editing. Content Optimization and Content Scoring are both in beta. Promptwatch's automated Content Agent plans, writes and publishes through a review inbox, but only on Business ($579) and Enterprise, not on the agency tiers. Agencies on Kick-off, Growth or Scale get content gap analysis and Agent Chat, not scheduled publishing.
Who should pick which
Pick Wellows if you run a lean agency with many small clients, your deliverable is a citation report plus an outreach plan, your clients' buyers don't lean on Claude or Copilot, and daily or weekly cadence is enough.
Pick Promptwatch if you need to explain causes as well as outcomes: why a page isn't cited (crawler logs), what citations are worth (conversions), and how fixes get shipped (Content Agent on Business). Also if Claude, Copilot or Grok matter to your category, or if you want MCP and API access on every paid plan.
Our recommendation
Wellows is a good citation tool at a price that makes it easy to try. We still rank Promptwatch first, because the three layers Wellows doesn't publish (crawler logs, conversion attribution and automated publishing) are the ones a team needs once the first citation report has been read. Start with the Explore plan or a 7-day trial on Essential at promptwatch.com and check your own crawler logs before you decide.
