Reddit, YouTube or LinkedIn: which source should you chase for AI citations?
Three social and community sources show up in AI answers. A decision guide for choosing between them using your own citation data rather than guesswork.
Quick verdict
Do not pick a platform because a blog post said it was hot. Pick it because your own tracked prompts cite it. The three sources behave differently, and your category will lean on one more than the others. Promptwatch has separate Reddit, YouTube, and LinkedIn citation reports, so you can see which of the three AI engines actually quote for your prompts before you spend a month of effort on any of them.
The three sources compared
| YouTube | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| Content type | Threads and comments | Video pages with titles, descriptions, transcripts | Posts and articles |
| Who writes it | Anyone, including your customers | You or creators | You, employees, peers |
| Control | Low | High if you publish, low if creators do | Medium |
| Effort | Ongoing, honest participation | Production time | Posting habit |
| Risk | Seen as spam if promotional | Low views if generic | Low reach if thin |
| What AI uses it for | Real-world opinions, comparisons | How-to and demos | Professional perspectives |
The last row is our reading, not a sourced rule. Verify it with your data.
Step 1: look at your own numbers
Open the citation reports for the three sources in Promptwatch. For each, record:
- The number of tracked prompts where that source is cited.
- Which specific threads, videos, or posts appear.
- Whether your brand or competitors are named in them.
Promptwatch's Citation Trends also classifies each citation by content type and source type, with citation rate over time, which helps you see whether a source is rising or fading in your category.
If Reddit appears in 30% of your prompts and LinkedIn in 2%, you know where the effort goes.
Step 2: Reddit, done honestly
Reddit is a community, and communities punish self-promotion. The sustainable approach is helpful participation: answer questions in the subreddits your buyers use, disclose your affiliation when you mention your product, and focus on the problem.
Find threads that AI already cites for your prompts, since those are the ones with reach. Promptwatch's Reddit citation report lists them. If the thread has outdated or wrong information about your category, a factual, disclosed reply is legitimate.
Industry context: Search Engine Journal covered an August 2026 drop in Reddit citations using Promptwatch data. It is a reminder that a source's weight can change, so check your own numbers regularly instead of relying on last quarter's belief.
Step 3: YouTube, if the prompts are how-to
When tracked prompts ask "how do I" or "what does X look like", video pages are natural sources. What helps is clear titles, descriptions that state what the video covers, and transcripts or captions that match the language of the question.
Check which videos AI cites for your category. If competitors or creators dominate, consider a collaboration or a focused series that answers the exact questions in your prompt panel.
Step 4: LinkedIn, if the audience is professional
LinkedIn posts and articles can appear as sources for B2B questions. Promptwatch's LinkedIn citation report shows which ones. If your leaders or employees already post about your category, you may be able to improve what exists rather than start from nothing. Specific, experience-based posts beat generic ones.
Step 5: decide with a simple matrix
| Your data shows | Move |
|---|---|
| One source dominates | Focus there for a quarter |
| All three small | Skip social, work on your own pages and offsite mentions |
| Competitors named in cited threads | Pursue corrections and participation |
| A source rising in Citation Trends | Move early |
| A source falling | Do not double down |
Pair it with the rest of the funnel
A citation on a social source is useful only if it affects outcomes. Visitor analytics records AI-referred sessions and conversions. Offsite mention reports show where your brand is named without a link. Page Tracker lets you follow a specific thread, video, or post over time.
Plan notes
The free Explore plan is limited to 10 prompts on ChatGPT only, so the social source reports need a paid plan. Essential costs $95 a month, with 50 prompts and a 7-day trial on monthly billing. Professional is $245, Business $579. Agency plans start at $199 and include unlimited prompts and projects. Confirm which tier carries each report before you buy.
Other platforms in the ranking cover citations too, such as Scrunch AI and AthenaHQ, but separate Reddit, YouTube, and LinkedIn views are what we like here.
Who should pick which
| You are... | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| A B2B software brand | Check LinkedIn and Reddit first |
| A consumer product | Reddit and YouTube first |
| A how-to heavy site | YouTube first |
| An agency | Run the three reports per client and choose by data |
| Resource-poor | Pick the one source your data supports, ignore the rest |
Choose by evidence. A tool that shows you all three side by side removes the argument, and Promptwatch does that without a custom build.
