What are the best AEO tools? Ranked and compared for 2026

A ranked comparison of the best AEO tools in 2026, from Promptwatch and AthenaHQ to Scrunch AI, Profound, Semrush and Ahrefs, with sourced pricing and who each suits.

AEO, answer engine optimization, is the work of getting your brand named and cited when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI answers a question. The category is crowded and the labels are inconsistent. Some products are trackers that tell you whether you appeared. Some are SEO suites that bolted on an AI module. A few try to cover the full loop from measurement to publishing.

This ranking sorts them by how much of that loop they cover. Prices come from vendor pages and our catalog, and where a vendor does not publish a number we say so.

How we ranked

We weighed five things:

  • Measurement depth: engines covered, prompts, sentiment, share of voice
  • Diagnosis: can it show why you are or are not cited (crawler logs, citation sources)?
  • Outcome tracking: does it connect AI visibility to visits and conversions?
  • Action: does it help you fix gaps, or only report them?
  • Price transparency: can you see what it costs without a sales call?

A tracker that does one of these well can still be the right buy. But if you want the "best" in a general sense, breadth wins, because AEO fails in the gaps between tools.

1. Promptwatch

Promptwatch is the only platform on this list that covers measurement, diagnosis, outcome and action in one product. Its visibility dashboards report a Visibility Score, Share of Voice, Sentiment and Position in Answer, run daily per model, country and language. Prompt tracking adds search volumes, difficulty scores, query fan-outs, personas and prompt types.

The diagnosis side is what separates it from trackers. Citation analytics show page and domain level citations, Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports, and offsite mentions. Agent Analytics reads IP-verified AI crawler logs. Visitor analytics attribute AI-referred traffic and conversions. And the Content Agent (Business and above) plans, writes and publishes against visibility gaps, with a review inbox or a hands-off mode, to WordPress, Webflow or Framer.

Plans: Explore is free (10 prompts, ChatGPT only). Essential is $95/mo, Professional $245/mo, Business $579/mo. Agencies have Kick-off $199/mo, Growth $399/mo and Scale $799/mo. Crawler logs start on Professional. A 7-day trial exists on monthly billing for most paid plans.

If you only evaluate one tool, make it this one. The reason is simple: most AEO work stalls at "now what?", and this platform answers that question inside the same workspace.

2. AthenaHQ

A GEO platform built by former Google Search and DeepMind engineers. Strengths: a GEO score, an Action Center with assignable tasks, and a content optimization agent. Starter is $295/mo with 3,600 credits (one credit per AI response) and a free tier of 300 credits exists. The catalog notes that credits can run down fast, that multi-country work pushes you to Enterprise, and that it lists no crawler-log product. Pick it if workflow and optimization tasks are your focus.

3. Scrunch AI

Monitoring plus an Agent Experience Platform that serves AI-optimized page versions to crawlers. Core is $250/mo with 125 prompts and four LLMs. It includes AI agent and bot traffic reporting. Reviewers cited in our catalog criticize its reporting and weekly refresh. Pick it if the crawler-side approach appeals.

4. Profound

Profound is sold as an AI Marketer with agents for content, demand and PR, alongside answer tracking. It has a 7-day free trial and a custom Enterprise plan, with an earlier estimate of about $40k a year. It suits large teams buying a broad platform. It is not the most direct route to a working AEO program for a small team.

5. Semrush AI Toolkit

An add-on to the Semrush suite, tracking mentions across AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. The catalog lists $99/mo per domain, with extras per prompt, domain and user, but could not reconfirm it on the vendor page. Best for teams already living in Semrush.

6. Ahrefs Brand Radar

Custom Prompts is free for paid Ahrefs plans, with a daily quota of 5, 10 or 20 prompts depending on tier. The AI Visibility Index starts at $199/mo. A fair add-on if Ahrefs is your core tool. The catalog flags a January 2026 independent test that found large undercounting of ChatGPT mentions, so treat its numbers as directional and spot check them.

7. HubSpot AEO

At $50/mo it is the cheapest brand-level option here, covering ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini with prioritized recommendations. Three engines only, no Claude, Copilot, Grok or Google AI Overviews. A reasonable start for HubSpot shops.

Budget trackers

If you only want mention monitoring at low cost, there are simple trackers. Otterly.AI lists Lite at $29/mo for 15 prompts, Standard at $189 for 100 and Premium at $489 for 400, with Gemini, Claude and AI Mode as paid add-ons. Peec AI is another prompt-level tracker whose current prices we could not capture. Both are monitoring tools, and neither covers crawler logs, visitor analytics or content creation the way the top of this list does. See Otterly.AI and Peec AI for details.

Who should pick which

  • Want the whole loop in one product: Promptwatch.
  • Want a workflow-led optimizer and can live with credits: AthenaHQ.
  • Already pay for Semrush, Ahrefs or HubSpot: try their module first, then check it against a dedicated tool.
  • Enterprise buyer with budget and a broad marketing brief: Profound.

One caution

No AEO tool can guarantee that an assistant will recommend you. They measure, diagnose and help you act. Pick the one that shortens the path from "we are missing" to "we fixed it."
