What is answer engine optimization, and why does it matter for SEO?

Answer engine optimization explained: what AEO is, how it differs from SEO and GEO, why it matters for search, and how to measure it with tools like Promptwatch.

Answer engine optimization, usually shortened to AEO, is the practice of making your content easy for AI systems and search features to use when they compose a direct answer. The goal is that when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot or Google's AI answers a question in your field, your brand is named, your page is cited, or both.

Classic SEO aims to rank a page in a list of links. AEO aims to be part of the answer itself. That sounds like a small shift. In practice it changes what you measure, which content you write and where you need to be present.

AEO, GEO and SEO: how the terms relate

The vocabulary is messy, so here is a practical reading.

  • SEO is the broad discipline of earning visibility in search engines. It covers technical health, content, links and more.
  • AEO focuses on question-and-answer surfaces: featured answers, voice assistants and AI answers that respond directly instead of listing links.
  • GEO, generative engine optimization, usually refers to the same effort aimed at generative AI engines such as ChatGPT and Perplexity.

In daily use, AEO and GEO overlap heavily, and vendors use them interchangeably. We use AEO here for the whole job of being the answer. None of these replace SEO. They sit on top of it.

How AI answers get built

Understanding the mechanism makes the tactics obvious. When you ask an AI search tool a question, it typically does three things:

  1. It may break your question into several searches. These sub-queries are called query fan-outs.
  2. It retrieves pages, from a search index or by fetching them live.
  3. It composes an answer and, in many products, cites the sources it used.

Each step gives you a way to win or lose. If your page does not match any fan-out, it is not retrieved. If a crawler cannot fetch it, it is not read. If it is read but vague, it is not used. If another source says the same thing more clearly, that one gets the citation.

Why AEO matters for SEO

It is where some of the click goes. People get answers without visiting a result page. When an assistant cites a source, a link to that source is often the only click. Being the cited source matters more as answers get longer.

Your brand can be mentioned without a click. Even if nobody visits, a mention shapes consideration. Measuring only clicks hides this.

The signals overlap, with differences. Clear structure, accurate information, crawlable pages and real authority help both. But AI systems also lean on third-party sources such as review sites, forums and video, so your presence beyond your own domain counts more than in classic SEO.

Traditional rank tracking does not show it. A page can rank well and never appear in AI answers, or the reverse. You need separate measurement.

What to do about it

  1. Answer questions plainly. Put the direct answer near the top of the page, then the detail. Use headings that match how people ask.
  2. Cover the sub-questions. Look at the fan-outs for your main topics and make sure a page addresses each.
  3. Keep pages crawlable. Do not block AI crawlers by accident through robots.txt, a firewall or a bot-protection setting. Verify with logs.
  4. Be accurate and specific. Vague claims do not get cited. Data, definitions and named features do.
  5. Earn mentions elsewhere. Reviews, directories, forums and editorial coverage feed the answers.
  6. Measure and repeat. Track a fixed prompt set over time.

How to measure AEO

This is the step most teams skip, and where tooling matters. Promptwatch maps onto each part of the job:

  • Prompt tracking: Prompt Explorer, search volumes, difficulty scores and query fan-outs show what to cover and track.
  • Visibility measurement: Visibility Score, Share of Voice, Sentiment and Position in Answer, run daily per model, country and language.
  • Citation analytics: which pages and domains get cited, including Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports and offsite mentions.
  • Crawler logs: Agent Analytics reads IP-verified logs from bots such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, so you know whether access is the problem. Logs start on Professional ($245/mo).
  • Visitor analytics: AI-referred traffic and conversions.
  • Content: content gap analysis, creation, refresh and publishing to WordPress, Webflow or Framer.

There is a free Explore plan with 10 prompts on ChatGPT, and Essential starts at $95/mo. Alternatives include AthenaHQ with an action-oriented GEO workflow from $295/mo, and Scrunch AI, whose Core plan is $250/mo. Both focus more on monitoring and recommendations than on crawler and traffic data.

What AEO cannot do

It cannot guarantee a mention. Answers vary by wording, country and day, and each engine has its own sources. A fair target is to raise the share of relevant prompts where you appear, and to fix visible obstacles.

A worked example of the shift

Imagine a company that sells accounting software to freelancers. In classic SEO it targets "accounting software for freelancers" and tries to rank a landing page. In AEO it also asks what a freelancer types into an assistant: "which accounting tool should I use if I invoice in two currencies?" The assistant may split that into sub-searches about multi-currency invoicing, pricing and reviews, then cite the pages it finds. The company now needs a page that answers the currency question directly, a presence on the review sites the assistant tends to cite, and crawlers that can reach both. The keyword is the same. The work around it is wider.

Is AEO a replacement for SEO?

No. Good SEO keeps your site crawlable, fast and authoritative, and AEO builds on those foundations. If your technical basics are weak, fix them first. If they are sound, AEO is the next layer: measure how AI treats you, then close the gaps.
