What's the best AI search tool?
What's the best AI search tool? How to choose between ChatGPT Search, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, and which tool to use to track and win visibility in them.
The question "what's the best AI search tool?" has two honest answers, and which one you need depends on which side of the screen you are on.
If you are a searcher, you want the engine that gives you good answers: ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot and others. If you run a brand, a site or a client's marketing, you want the tool that shows how those engines talk about you and what to change. We cover both below, but we are upfront about where our evidence sits. Our directory ranks the second kind, the tools that track and improve visibility in AI search. We do not run quality benchmarks on the engines themselves.
If you mean the engines: how to choose
We will not name a winner among the answer engines. Any ranking of "best" would depend on what you ask, which country you are in and which version you tried that week, and we have no data that would let us rank them honestly. What we can do is give you a quick method.
- Write ten questions you really ask. Include a factual one, a comparison, a local one and a vague one.
- Run them in each engine. ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Gemini are the usual four to try. Copilot is worth adding if you live in Microsoft tools.
- Check the sources. Does the engine show where an answer came from, and do the links actually support the claim? An answer without checkable sources is a weaker answer.
- Note what you would act on. The engine whose answers you would trust enough to click, buy or book from is the best one for you.
Try again in a month, because these products change quickly. And keep in mind that different engines name different brands for the same question, which is the reason the second half of this article exists.
If you mean the tool to win in them: the shortlist
Brands care because the answer engine increasingly decides which options a buyer sees. Tracking that is a different product category, often called AI visibility or GEO tooling. Here is how the main options compare, using published facts.
1. Promptwatch
Promptwatch is the most complete option in this category and the one we would evaluate first. It monitors the live-search engines through their real interfaces, including ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Amazon Alexa and Meta AI, and tracks Claude, DeepSeek, Mistral and Grok via API.
What separates it from simpler trackers is everything after the mention count. Citation analytics show which pages, Reddit threads and YouTube videos the engines cite. Agent Analytics provides IP-verified AI crawler logs, so you can see whether bots reach your pages. Visitor analytics attribute AI-referred visits and conversions. Content tools then plan and write against the gaps, and publish to WordPress, Webflow and Framer.
Pricing: Explore is free (10 prompts, ChatGPT only). Essential is $95 a month, Professional is $245, Business is $579. Agency plans run $199, $399 and $799 with unlimited projects and prompts.
2. AthenaHQ
AthenaHQ was built by former Google Search and DeepMind engineers. It tracks brand appearances in AI answers, produces a GEO score and turns gaps into actions through an Action Center. Starter is $295 a month on credits, across 11 models. It has no published crawler-log product.
3. Scrunch AI
Scrunch AI Core is $250 a month with 125 prompts across four LLMs, and it includes site audits and agent traffic reporting. Its Agent Experience Platform, which serves AI-optimized page versions to crawlers, is distinctive. Reviewers often cite weak reporting and weekly refreshes.
4. Profound
Profound has deep engine coverage at Enterprise level, with up to nine answer engines, and a free 7-day trial. Pricing beyond the trial is custom, with an earlier estimate of about $40k a year. It now describes itself as an AI Marketer with agents for research, content and reporting.
5. Agentic tools and suites
- Okara has a free tier and paid plans from $129 a month, and ships fixes as GitHub pull requests.
- Seology runs 200+ checks and ships fixes as pull requests, with Pro at $49 a month.
- Semrush AI Toolkit was listed at $99 a month per domain.
- Ahrefs Brand Radar includes Custom Prompts on paid Ahrefs plans, and an AI Visibility Index from $199 a month.
These are action tools or suite add-ons, and they measure less than the platforms above.
6. Simple trackers
Peec AI offers prompt-level monitoring with a clean interface. Otterly.AI starts at $29 a month with 15 prompts, and its data can be up to 7 days stale.

Who should pick which
A marketer or founder who wants to be named in AI answers: Promptwatch. The deciding factor is that it connects the mention to the cause, through crawler logs and citations, and to the result, through conversions.
A searcher choosing an engine: run your own ten questions. No directory can do that for you.
An enterprise team: ask for AthenaHQ, Scrunch AI and Profound demos and compare reporting.
An SEO team already on Semrush or Ahrefs: try the add-ons for a handful of prompts, then decide whether you need a dedicated platform.
No tool, in either meaning of the question, can guarantee that an engine will recommend you.
