Which tools measure traffic coming from ChatGPT and Perplexity?
Compare the tools that measure traffic from ChatGPT and Perplexity: GA4 setups, attribution tools, crawler dashboards and AI visibility platforms with conversions.
Measuring traffic from ChatGPT and Perplexity is really three separate jobs, and different tools cover different ones. You can count the visits that arrive from an AI answer. You can see which AI crawlers fetch your pages before they cite them. And you can connect those visits to revenue. Few tools do all three, so the right pick depends on how far down that list you need to go.
The three things people mean by "AI traffic"
Referral visits. A person clicks a link inside a ChatGPT or Perplexity answer and lands on your site. This is what most analytics tools can see, if they can identify the source.
Crawler and fetch activity. AI bots request your pages. This is not human traffic, but it tells you whether you are even eligible to be cited. It is a leading indicator, and a useful one.
Conversions and revenue. What those visitors did next. Most tools stop before this.
Keep these separate in your reporting. Mixing bot hits and human visits is the fastest way to produce a number nobody trusts.
Option 1: your existing web analytics
If you already run Google Analytics 4, you can create a custom channel grouping or segment that matches AI referrers by source. It costs nothing and is a reasonable start. The limits are practical. The setup is manual, you have to keep the source list up to date as engines change, and some AI visits may arrive without a clear referrer. It also sees only clicks. It cannot tell you which prompts you appear in, which pages are cited, or whether a crawler is blocked.
Option 2: attribution and crawler tools
A few specialist tools cover one slice well.
- Attrifast is a revenue attribution and web analytics product that joins first-party sessions to Stripe and Shopify payments, and it splits ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Copilot into their own revenue lines. Starter is $9.99 a month with 50,000 events. Its AI visibility module is shallow on Starter (10 prompts every 30 days), so treat it as an attribution tool with a visibility sidecar.
- Known Agents sells AI Chat Referral Tracking for human visits from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and other assistants, and crawler analytics for bots. There is a free plan, with paid from $29 a month. It does not run prompts against AI engines, so it cannot tell you what the models say about you.
- Cloudflare AI Crawl Control is a dashboard feature that shows which AI crawlers request your pages, grouped by operator. It is included on every plan, but referral data needs a paid plan (Pro from $20 a month), and it only covers traffic passing through Cloudflare.
- Similarweb offers AI traffic trends in its Gen AI Intel Suite, but its own small-site data is described as directional, and the AI suite is largely behind custom packages. Use it for market-level context, not for your own conversions.
Option 3: AI visibility platforms with traffic built in
This is the most useful category if you want the traffic number next to the cause of it. A visibility platform runs the prompts, so it can tell you both that traffic came from Perplexity and which prompt and citation sent it.
| Tool | Traffic measurement | Pricing (published) | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Promptwatch | Visitor analytics: AI-referred traffic and conversions by engine, plus crawler logs and 360 Insights | Free Explore; Essential $95/mo; Professional $245/mo; Business $579/mo | Visitor analytics needs a script, GTM template or WordPress plugin |
| Orchly | AI traffic by engine reporting | Essential $49/mo, Pro $125/mo | Conversion tracking not documented at depth; no crawler logs |
| LLM Pulse | AI traffic analytics | From EUR 49/mo | Weekly default cadence |
| Cognizo | AI traffic analytics | Platform from $499/mo | No published crawler logs |
Why Promptwatch is the pick for this job
Promptwatch's visitor analytics counts AI-referred traffic and conversions from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, DeepSeek, Kimi, Mistral and more, via a lightweight script, the GTM template or the WordPress plugin. That covers the referral half.
The part that sets it apart is how it connects the three jobs. Agent Analytics provides real-time, IP-verified AI crawler logs for bots including GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User, with a citation rate per page. The 360 Insights view joins crawler logs, citation clicks and AI-referred visits per page. So you can see that a page is crawled, cited, clicked, and converted, or find the step where it breaks. A page with lots of crawls and no citations is a content problem. A page with citations and no visits is a presentation problem.
Plan limits are worth knowing. Visitor events run 200K a month on Essential, 1M on Professional and 10M on Business, and crawler logs start on Professional. The case study Promptwatch publishes for TreeHouse (Pararius, Huurwoningen.nl) is an example of the workflow: AI search became about 25% of organic conversions, almost all of it from ChatGPT, after fixing crawler access. That is TreeHouse's result, not a promise for every site.
AthenaHQ and Scrunch AI are the other two dedicated platforms worth comparing. AthenaHQ lists GA4 and Search Console connections but no AI-referral analytics at Promptwatch's depth. Scrunch AI lists AI agent and bot traffic reporting, but not visitor analytics that attribute AI-referred traffic to conversions.
Who should pick which
- Just want a quick count: GA4 with a custom channel grouping.
- Ecommerce store tracking revenue by AI source: Attrifast, or Wildcard for commerce-specific work.
- Cloudflare site that wants crawler visibility cheaply: Cloudflare AI Crawl Control.
- Want visits, crawls, citations and conversions together: Promptwatch.
One caution applies to every tool. AI referral traffic is only the clicks. Many buyers read the answer and never click, so a flat traffic line does not mean you are absent. Pair the traffic view with prompt tracking to see mentions that never produced a visit.
