AI visibility tools compared on social citation tracking (2026)

Which AI visibility tools show the Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn and Instagram posts that AI answers cite? A comparison desk view, with a sourced table and who should pick which.

Quick verdict

Most teams check Reddit and stop there. AI answers also cite LinkedIn posts, YouTube videos and, since late October 2026, Instagram accounts and reels are trackable too. Among the tools in our catalog, Promptwatch is the one with documented coverage of all four, plus a filter that narrows each to your own accounts. Ahrefs Brand Radar covers YouTube and Reddit sources per its catalog entry. For the rest, our catalog is silent, which we treat as unknown.

Why social citations deserve their own check

When an AI engine answers "what is the best tool for X," it often leans on pages a brand does not control: a Reddit thread, a creator's video, a LinkedIn post from an analyst. Those are citations, and they shape the recommendation. A brand that only audits its own site misses the sources doing the persuading.

Social sources are also the ones you can influence quickly. Answering a thread honestly, publishing a useful video, or encouraging an employee to post something specific is faster than winning a link from a publication. But you can only do that for the sources you can see.

What to look for in a tool

Before comparing vendors, decide what you need:

  1. Platform coverage. Which networks are reported as sources?
  2. Post-level detail. Do you see the individual post, with its engagement, or only a domain total?
  3. Your own accounts. Can you filter to citations of channels you run, so you can tell if your own posts earn mentions?
  4. The prompts behind each citation. Without this, a cited post is trivia.
  5. Export. Someone will want the list in a spreadsheet.

What the sources say

Promptwatch

According to its changelog, social coverage was built up in steps:

  • LinkedIn (8 September 2026): posts and authors, with a Top LinkedIn Posts widget available for custom dashboards that shows the posts AI models cite most.
  • Reddit and YouTube: citation reports alongside LinkedIn.
  • Social channels and My channels (30 September 2026): you add the Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn accounts your brand runs, then turn on My channels to see only the citations of your own subreddits, channels, pages and profiles.
  • Instagram (28 October 2026): see which Instagram accounts, reels and posts AI answers cite, with their likes, comments, plays and follower counts. A Posts tab lists each cited post with its caption, account, format, engagement, citations and average position, and clicking a post shows the prompts and responses that cited it. An Accounts tab lists each cited account with its category, followers, cited posts and when it was last cited. Both tabs export to CSV or Excel.

Note the gap: the changelog describes My channels for Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn. It does not say Instagram is included, so do not assume it. The changelog also does not state a plan for Instagram tracking.

Ahrefs Brand Radar

Our catalog entry says Brand Radar reports on AI crawler activity, YouTube and Reddit sources. It does not record LinkedIn or Instagram, and does not describe post-level detail or filters for your own accounts. Pricing as read on 24 October 2026: Custom Prompts is free for every paid Ahrefs plan from Lite up, and the AI Visibility Index starts at $199 a month.

AthenaHQ, Scrunch AI, Profound and the rest

Our entries for these describe visibility tracking, scores, audits and citation reporting in general terms, but none records social platform coverage. We would not say they lack it. We would say we could not confirm it, and that you should test it in a trial with a prompt that you know draws a social citation.

"Not recorded" means our catalog does not say, not that the feature is missing.

A manual method that works without any of these

If you have no tool yet, you can still spot social citations. Take ten buyer-style prompts, run them in the engine you care about, and open every cited link. Mark each source by type. After one afternoon you will know whether your category leans on Reddit, video, LinkedIn or something else. Repeat monthly, and keep a log so you can see change.

This is slow and it samples only the answers you happen to see. But it teaches you which networks to monitor, and it keeps you from paying for coverage you will not use. For the Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn side in depth, read our guide to which social source to chase.

Acting on what you find

A cited social post is a lead, not a verdict. Ask three questions of each one. Is the information correct? Could your brand be part of that conversation honestly? Does the post cite pages of yours that need to be better? If the answer to the second is yes, the practical move is a useful reply or a post of your own, not a promotional one. Communities punish the other approach and engines tend to cite substance.

Do not chase engagement figures for their own sake. Likes and plays tell you the post is visible to people. They do not tell you the engine will keep citing it. Citation data, with the prompt and position, is the better signal. Our companion piece on tools that track the third-party sites AI uses to recommend brands goes deeper on that.

Who should pick which

  • Promptwatch if your category draws social citations and you want post-level detail across four networks, a filter for your own accounts on three of them, and exports. It is also the one to start with if you want the citation data next to crawler logs and visitor analytics.
  • Ahrefs Brand Radar if you already pay for Ahrefs and your needs stop at YouTube and Reddit.
  • Anyone else on the list after you have tested a prompt that you know cites a social post, and seen it appear.

Bottom line

Social citation tracking is a feature where vendor marketing is vague and the details decide the value. Ask for the platform list, ask whether you can see the post and its prompts, and ask whether your own channels can be isolated. Promptwatch answers all three in its changelog, which is why it comes first here.
