How to choose a local AI visibility tool
A buying checklist for local AI visibility tools: location granularity, engines, prompt control, citations, crawler logs, AI traffic attribution, agency workspaces and price per location.
The short version
Local AI visibility tools look alike on their homepages. They all promise to show whether AI recommends your locations. The differences sit in eight places: how precisely they set location, which engines they cover on your plan, whether you control the prompts, how deep the citation data goes, whether they read AI crawler logs, whether they connect AI answers to visits and conversions, how they handle agency clients, and what a location really costs.
This is the local version of our general guide on how to choose an AI visibility tool. If you want the full list of demo questions, pair it with the AI visibility tool buying checklist.
1. Location granularity
Ask exactly how the tool sets location, and on which plan.
The options in our catalog run from coarse to fine. Country targeting is common. City or per-location tracking is where local starts, and it's often gated: Promptwatch has state and city on Business ($579/mo) and every agency plan, and Uberall's location-level tracking starts on GEO Scale ($449/mo). Geo-grids sample many points around a location; Local Falcon scans from 9 to 441 points. Coordinate targeting asks from a single spot: Promptwatch's local GEO/SEO targeting pins a monitor to exact coordinates with a 20 m to 5 km radius on Business, Agency Scale and Enterprise.
Match this to how your customers choose. If they pick by city, city tracking is enough. If two branches in one city serve different neighbourhoods, you need something finer. Our method comparison covers the trade-offs.
2. Engines covered, and how location applies to each
Engine lists vary a lot. BrightLocal's module covers ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. Synup and Reputation describe ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Birdeye lists seven. Yext Scout covers about four, and Yext's pages disagree on which. Promptwatch monitors eight live-search platforms through their real interfaces (ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Amazon Alexa, Meta AI) and tracks Claude, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral and others via API.
The local question goes one step further: does the location setting change the answer on every engine? Promptwatch is upfront that coordinate targeting affects ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, while other models fall back to country, state or city. Ask every vendor the same thing, and ask whether answers come from the real interface or an API. Reputation's own guide, for example, warns that its API-based results may differ from the consumer apps.
3. Prompt control
Can you write your own prompts, and how many per location?
Synup writes 16 discovery prompts per location, and the pages we read don't describe adding your own. BrightLocal suggests prompts from the business category and lets you edit them, with a hard cap of 20 per location. Promptwatch lets you build the prompt set yourself, with search volumes, difficulty scores and query fan-outs per prompt, suggestions from Search Console or People Also Ask, and personas. Its agency plans have unlimited prompts.
If your local categories have unusual phrasing ("walk-in clinic open Sunday", "same-day boiler repair"), a fixed vendor-written list will miss the questions that matter.
4. Citations
When AI recommends a competitor, which sources did it lean on? Most local tools now show some source data. Local Falcon lists the sources AI draws on. BrightLocal ranks the directories AI cites for your category and routes gaps into its Citation Builder. Birdeye traces wrong location details to their source.
Ask how deep it goes. Promptwatch reports citations at page and domain level, with Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports, offsite mentions (your brand named without a link) and citation trends over time. For local businesses, knowing that ChatGPT keeps citing one review site or one Reddit thread tells you where to spend effort.
5. AI crawler logs
This is the check most local tools fail. None of the listings suites or Local Falcon document AI crawler logs on our listings. Without them you can't tell whether GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot ever fetched your location pages, or whether they hit errors.
Promptwatch's Agent Analytics records IP-verified crawler visits, filters out spoofed user agents, explains failures, and shows a citation rate per page. It's on Professional ($245/mo) and every agency plan, but not on Essential. Our guide to setting up AI crawler log tracking explains the setup.
6. AI traffic attribution
Visibility doesn't pay the rent. Bookings do. Ask whether the tool can show AI-referred visits and conversions on your site. None of the local suites in our catalog document this on our listings. Uberall lists a GA4 integration, which is worth asking about in a demo.
Promptwatch's visitor analytics track sessions from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and other engines through a lightweight script, a GTM template or the WordPress plugin, with conversions, on every paid plan. If you'd rather start in your own analytics, see how to measure AI search traffic in GA4.
7. Agency workspaces
Agencies with local clients need separate workspaces, client-ready reports and sane seat counts. BrightLocal's help center says export and white-label aren't live yet. Synup offers white-label from its Premium plan and shareable read-only report links. Uberall includes unlimited users. Promptwatch's agency plans include unlimited projects, unlimited pitch projects, unlimited prompts, 10 seats, crawler logs and state and city tracking, and it offers a white-label workspace and client portal for agencies. 8. Price per location
Work out the cost per location at your real size, because billing models differ:
| Tool | How price scales | What our listing says |
|---|---|---|
| Promptwatch | Plan allowances, not per location | Business $579/mo: 5 projects, 350 prompts, 42,000 responses. Agency plans: unlimited projects and prompts |
| Synup AEO | Location bands | $49/mo for 1; $299/mo up to 10; $499/mo up to 25; $899/mo up to 50 |
| BrightLocal | Location bands | $41/mo for 1 (Track, monthly); $62/mo for 2 to 5 |
| Reputation | Per location | Rep Core $80/location/mo, with the AI dashboard bundled |
| Local Falcon | Credits per grid point | Unlimited locations; credits drive cost |
| Uberall GEO Studio | Credits and prompts | Location-level from $449/mo; location count not stated |
| Birdeye Search AI | Metered prompts by location band | Not published |
| Yext Scout | Bundled with Yext | Not published |
At full capacity, Synup's Premium band works out to about $30 per location and Scale to about $18. Those are monthly prices for the whole suite, not just AI tracking. For credit and prompt meters, multiply locations by prompts, engines and runs per month before you compare.
Where we land
If wrong hours and addresses in AI answers are your main issue and you already pay for a listings suite, switch on its AI module and see how far it gets you. If you need to grow AI visibility across locations and prove the return, run down this list and you'll find few tools tick sections 5 and 6. Promptwatch does both, and adds city and coordinate targeting on the plans that need it, which is why it tops our best local AI visibility tools.
