How to test a local AI visibility tool in a free trial

A practical trial plan for local AI visibility tools: what each trial actually unlocks, what to set up before day one, a seven-day test schedule, and what you can't test until you pay.

The short version

A trial only proves something if the plan you're trialing includes the local features you'd actually buy. With local AI visibility tools that often isn't the case. Location-level tracking tends to sit on a higher plan than the one with the free trial, so check that first, then go in with a fixed list of prompts, places and competitors so every day of the trial produces data you can compare.

Step 1: check what the trial actually unlocks

Before signing up anywhere, write down which local feature you need (city, a set of store locations, a grid, exact coordinates) and confirm it's on a trialable plan. Here is what our listings say.

ToolFree way inLocal feature on the trial?
Promptwatch7-day trial on monthly billing for Essential, Professional, Agency Kick-off and Agency Growth; free Explore tier (ChatGPT, 10 prompts)City tracking: yes on Kick-off and Growth. No on Essential and Professional (country level). Coordinate targeting: not on any trialable plan
Uberall GEO Studio7-day trial on GEO Starter and GEO ScaleLocation-level tracking is on Scale ($449/mo), not Starter
Local Falcon100 free credits, no cardYes; one credit per grid point
BrightLocal Local AI Visibility14-day trial, no cardPer-location scoring is the module itself
Synup AEO14-day trial on the Solo plan (1 location)One location; reports refresh monthly

Yext ScoutNot stated; demo and salesNot stated

The Promptwatch row needs spelling out, because the plan matrix is specific. The 7-day trial applies only on monthly billing, and only to Essential ($95), Professional ($245), Agency Kick-off ($199) and Agency Growth ($399). State and city tracking are on Kick-off and Growth, which you can trial, and on Business ($579), which has no trial. Local GEO/SEO coordinate targeting is only on Business, Agency Scale ($799) and Enterprise, and none of those can be trialed. So an agency can test city-level monitors for free for a week. A brand trialing Essential or Professional will see country-level data only, and nobody can trial coordinate targeting. If coordinates are the reason you're buying, ask Promptwatch to show it on a call before you commit to Business.

Also note what Essential leaves out: it has no crawler logs. If you want to test whether AI crawlers can reach your location pages, trial Professional or an agency plan.

Step 2: prepare before the clock starts

Seven days goes fast. Have these ready before you click sign up:

  • A fixed list of 15 to 30 local prompts. Mix category questions ("best emergency dentist near me", "family lawyer in [city]") with a few comparisons and branded ones, and use the same list in every tool you trial.
  • The places that matter: your city or cities, plus storefront addresses if you're testing coordinates or grids.
  • The handful of local competitors you know you lose to.
  • A manual baseline. Ask a few of the prompts yourself in ChatGPT and Google's AI Mode from the relevant city and save the answers with the date, so you can sanity-check the tool later.
  • Access to your CDN or site. Crawler logs need a connection (Promptwatch supports Cloudflare, AWS CloudFront, Fastly, Vercel, Netlify, Akamai, Google Cloud CDN, custom HTTP, or its WordPress plugin), and visitor analytics need a script, the GTM template or the WordPress plugin. Line up whoever controls those in advance.

Step 3: a seven-day schedule

Day 1

Create the project, load the prompt list, add competitors and set the location on each monitor. In Promptwatch that means a monitor per city (on agency plans) or per country (on Essential and Professional), with the models and language you care about. Connect crawler logs and install visitor analytics the same day, because both only collect from the moment they're live.

Day 2

Compare the first results with your manual baseline. They won't match word for word, since AI answers vary, but if the tool says you're named in nearly every answer and your own checks say you rarely appear, ask why.

Days 3 to 5

Promptwatch runs prompt panels daily, so by now you have a short trend. Pick one prompt where a competitor beats you and try to explain it inside the tool: which pages and domains did the engine cite, did GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot fetch your location page, and did the crawl hit an error? A tool that can't get you from "we lost" to "here's the likely reason" in a few clicks will struggle when the question comes from your boss.

Day 6

Check whether any AI-referred sessions showed up in visitor analytics and whether any of them converted. Low-traffic local sites may see little in a week. That doesn't mean failure. What you're checking is that the pipe works.

Day 7

Work out what the plan you'd actually need costs at your full prompt and location count, then cancel or convert before the trial bills.

Tools on longer trials need a slightly different rhythm. Synup refreshes AEO reports monthly and the trial covers one location, so expect one report in 14 days. BrightLocal runs weekly, monthly or on demand, and shows a trend from the second run, so trigger a second run before the trial ends. With Local Falcon's 100 free credits, one 9x9 scan uses 81 of them, so spend them on your most important keyword and location.

Step 4: score what you saw

Keep it simple. For each tool, write one line on each of these:

  1. Did the location setting match what you'll pay for?
  2. Did results roughly agree with your manual checks?
  3. Could you explain one lost answer end to end?
  4. Did crawler and visitor data start flowing?
  5. What does the real plan cost at full size?

Our wider guide on how to choose a local AI visibility tool covers the criteria in more depth.

Where we land

For most teams, Promptwatch is the trial worth starting with, as long as you pick the plan that matches the test. Agencies should trial Kick-off or Growth to see city-level monitors alongside crawler logs and visitor analytics in the same week. Brands should trial Professional to test crawler logs, citations and attribution at country level, then step up to Business for city and coordinate targeting with eyes open, knowing Business has no trial. Our Promptwatch vs Local Falcon comparison explains how a coordinate monitor differs from a grid if that's the decision you're weighing.
