Best GEO tools for AI startups (2026)

Seven GEO tools compared for AI startups: coding agent coverage, how fast each one shows a new page getting cited, live search versus training data, and what a seed budget buys.

An AI startup has an awkward relationship with AI search. Your buyers are the people most likely to ask a chatbot "what's the best tool for transcribing sales calls?" and act on the answer. But your company may be younger than the training data of the models answering, so a model that answers from memory has never heard of you. The engines that search the web can find you, if something they trust has written about you.

That makes three things more important for an AI startup than for an established brand. You need to see the gap between live-search engines and memory-only models. You need to know how quickly a new page or a launch post starts getting cited, and when it fades. And if developers build with your API, you need to know what coding agents suggest when someone asks them to add your kind of feature.

Quick verdict

Promptwatch is the strongest fit: it splits real-interface engines from API-tracked models, tracks Codex, Claude Code and OpenCode, and reports per-page ramp-up and decay in Citation Trends. Its Essential plan is $95 a month with a 7-day free trial. The Prompting Company is the specialist for agent onboarding tests, but coding agents sit on its $3,000-a-month White-glove tier. Tight budgets can start on HubSpot AEO at $50 a month, knowing it covers three engines.

Prompts worth tracking

AI categories get renamed every quarter, so track the job, not only the label:

  • "Best AI tool for [job] in 2026"
  • "AI alternative to [incumbent software] for [team size]"
  • "[Your startup] vs [better-funded rival]: which is more accurate?"
  • "Open-source alternative to [your product]"
  • "Does [your product] train on customer data?"
  • "Is [your startup] legit?"
  • "Which API should I use to [task] in Python?" (ask this one to coding agents too)

The "train on customer data" and "is it legit" prompts are where young companies get hurt. Engines fill the gap with whatever a forum thread guessed.

What an AI startup needs from a GEO tool

Live search and memory, side by side. Promptwatch monitors the real interfaces of ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Amazon Alexa and Meta AI, and separately tracks models through their APIs (Claude, DeepSeek, Mistral, Grok and others) to show what they answer from training data. For a startup, the second group is often empty for months. Seeing that split stops you from reading a zero in Claude's API answers as a content failure. Our explainer on API-tracked versus real-UI tracking covers the difference.

Speed of citation. Promptwatch's Citation Trends shows, per page, when it was first cited, how many days it took to ramp up, its peak rate and its decay half-life. For a launch post or a benchmark page, that is the number you actually want. Promptwatch's own content half-life report found news loses half its ChatGPT citations within about 36 days, which is a useful warning for startups living on launch announcements.

Coding agents. If your product has an SDK or API, Promptwatch's coding agent visibility shows what Codex, Claude Code and OpenCode recommend. Our post on whether Claude Code or Codex recommends your product goes deeper.

Wrong facts, fast. Brand Narrative is on every Promptwatch plan and lists the claims engines make about you by theme. Fact Check (from Business) checks a claim against your own crawled pages.

The ranking

1. Promptwatch

Promptwatch covers all four needs above on a self-serve plan. Every paid plan can track any of the supported engines. Prompt Volumes estimates monthly demand and difficulty for prompts, and query fan-outs show the sub-queries each engine ran, which helps when your category has no settled name yet. The MCP server and REST API are on every paid plan, so an engineer can pull last week's lost prompts into Claude Code or Cursor. Agent Chat can deliver a scheduled weekly briefing in Slack.

Plan fit for a startup: Essential ($95) for 50 prompts and Visitor Analytics; Professional ($245) for 150 prompts, AI crawler logs and 5 AEO articles a month; Business ($579) when you need the automated Content Agent or hourly tracking around a launch. Seats are unlimited on every paid plan.

2. AthenaHQ

AthenaHQ has a free Essential tier with 300 credits and a $295 Starter with 3,600 credits across 11 models. The Action Center suits a founder who wants a task list. Credits are one per AI response, so a startup that adds many prompts will burn through Starter quickly. Coding agents aren't in the sources we read.

3. Scrunch AI

Scrunch AI Core is $250 a month for 125 prompts and 5,000 responses on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Copilot, with bot traffic reporting. AXP, which serves AI-optimized page versions to agents, is the interesting part for an AI company, but it is Enterprise only.

4. The Prompting Company

The Prompting Company is built for agent-era products. Its Agent Experience Benchmark has a coding agent read your docs and run an onboarding task in a fresh sandbox. Basic is $99 for 25 prompts on ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, and Pro is $299 for 100 prompts. Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode only appear on White-glove at $3,000 a month.

5. Profound

Profound offers a free 7-day trial with 50 daily prompts on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, and a custom Enterprise plan. It suits a well-funded AI company that wants marketing agents for content and PR as well as tracking. For a seed-stage team, the enterprise contract is usually out of reach.

6. LLM Pulse

LLM Pulse starts at €49 a month (€79 with daily tracking) for 50 prompts on five engines, with an MCP server and unlimited seats on every plan. The REST API arrives on Scale at €299. A good cheap tracker for a technical team.

7. HubSpot AEO

HubSpot AEO is $50 a month standalone, with a 28-day free trial, for 25 daily prompts on ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. It is included in Marketing Hub Professional, so a startup already on HubSpot may have it.

Who should pick which

Pick Promptwatch if developers build on your product or if you need to see whether launch pages get cited and how fast they fade. Pick The Prompting Company if your main fear is that an agent fails to onboard with your docs, and you can fund a managed program. AthenaHQ fits a founder who wants a task queue more than analytics. If you're pre-revenue and already on HubSpot, use HubSpot AEO until you outgrow three engines. LLM Pulse is the cheap option for a team that scripts everything.

Honest limits

A young company can do everything right and still be missing from API-tracked answers until the next model trains. No tool changes that. Answers also vary by day and engine, so a single bad run is noise. Look at trends over two to four weeks, and don't promise investors a visibility number after the first week.

FAQ

Why does Claude never mention my startup?

If you're looking at Claude through an API, you're seeing training data, and your company may be newer than it. Promptwatch tracks Claude via API, so expect that gap to persist until a model update. Live-search engines like Perplexity and ChatGPT Search are where new companies show up first.

Do I need crawler logs at the seed stage?

Only if you suspect crawlers can't read your site, for example a JavaScript-heavy app shell. Promptwatch crawler logs start on Professional; the free Agentic Readiness Check tests robots.txt against nine AI crawlers first.

Which tools track coding agents?

In our sources, Promptwatch (Codex, Claude Code, OpenCode) and The Prompting Company on its White-glove tier.

How many prompts does a startup need?

Fifty well-chosen prompts on Promptwatch Essential is enough to start. Cover the job, your two closest rivals and the trust questions.
